Need suggestions on a good Tow Vehicle....

Lately I've been considering a second car/truck to compliment the M3. I really hate driving the M3 around when the weather is crappy here in CO.

Anyways, I'd like to get into a 4x4 (might as well since I'm in CO) truck that can tow my M3. I really want something that is going to be reliable and not give me many headaches.

Right now I'm looking at about a $10k budget.

I'd like to get something Japanese since I've had bad experiences in the past with domestic trucks but I dont know if there is anything other there in my budget that will be able to tow that much weight.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks.

Maybe the Toyota Tacoma? Not sure if it will be able to tow the M, but it should be able to. Or Nissan Frontier

It depends on if you want a full size truck or mid size. I personaly wouldn't want a small truck like Tocoma for towing.

A good mid size truck with a V8 and good towing package is the Dodge Dakota.

Most Japanese trucks don't have much power. You can easily find a domestic truck in that price range that is fairly new since these cars depreciate so quickly.

    I own nothing.
I just wonder if you can find an older LAnd Cruiser (w/ the 4.5L I-6) It is the gen before the current one. Anyway, I wonder if that might be able to tow your M3? LAnd Cruiser are practically industructible.

For that money, lI'd ook for a used Toyota Tundra... or perhaps it's predecessor which was the "T-100" model.

It's the only non-domestic PU I'd use to do any sort of semi-serious towing.

That's a good idea, but I doubt you can find one for around $10,000. Land Cruisers are great.

The T100's are V6, and they aren't really considered viable competitors to the domestic full sizers, since they aren't powerful enough, etc. Maybe you can think about a 4Runner as the alternative.

I have an 89 Jeep Cherokee with a Factory Class 3 Towing Package that will carry 500 Lbs Tounge Weight, 5000 Lbs Trailer Weight. This seems to tow pretty well, although it does strain it some going up steep hills.

Good Tow Vehicles: Jeep Cherokee/ Grand Cherokee, GMC/ Chevy Suburban- Tahoe- K5 Blazer, Ford Explorer- F Series P/U's- Expedition- Excursion, Dodge Durango- Dakota P/U's- Ram P/U's, Mercedes-Benz ML Class, Toyota Tundra- Land Cruiser

There are many more, but several of these you can find used in the price range you are looking for.

An old Mercedes Unimog or Pinzgauer could be had for around $10k. They're certainly ugly but virtually indestructible. Driving one everyday would be... odd. But what other stock truck can go farther than a Hummer offroad or compete with a locomotive for towing capacity?

If you gave a european engineer 8300 cc's to play with, he'd come up with a lot more than 500 hp. We can get that much these days from a pencil sharpener..

If you want to tow things, don't get a japanese truck.. they are not designed to tow heavy loads and you WILL have problems with it. You should stay away from pre-99 chevy's and gmc's because they are notorious for transmission problems. Also stay away from pre-01 dodges for the same reason. I can't belive im saying this but......... Get a ford.....

hummm i beg to differ on the transmission statement. we have a 93 suburban with 230k miles on it. original engine. never rebuilt and the tranney just got rebuilt for the first time 5k miles ago. this is not the first Chev truck that i have personally seen do this. shop teachers just got rebuilt and he had 230k on his 94 truck. they last for ever. don't be scared of them.

I agree. If you want power you should get a pre 2000 Chevy or GMC CK truck with the 454 7.4 litre engine. That's massive torque. If anything, it is the DaimlerChrysler Trucks that have transmission issues. GM Powertrain makes automatic transmissions for BMW, and if people followed their regulations, they are nearly foolproof.

'89 Chevrolet Surburban 185k miles, no tramission rebuild. It did have a engine rebuild at 120k. All towing options. It has the 5.7 350 It still tows the boat just fine, the M should be no problem.

Q: So will your new company car be a Volvo?
A: No, I will continue to drive my dream car, the BMW M5.

Oh, sure, they are better built than a Mercedes and more silent than a Rolls but where's the elan? Where was the flair? Where was that one tiny detail that made car enthusiasts everywhere stand back, nod sagely, and go "mmmmmmmm"."

"A year and nearly 20,000 miles in the suede-lined saddle of the Lexus IS 300 proved that this high-end sport sedan is HARDLY Japan's answer to BMW's 3 Series." - Bob Gritzinger, Autoweek.
