We've updated our reliability stats for the 5-Series to include owner experiences through September 30, 2014.

Repair frequencies, in terms of repair trips per 100 cars per year:

    2014 5-Series: 18, low, small sample size
    2013 5-Series: 19, low
    2012 5-Series: 44, moderate
    2011 5-Series: 53, moderate
    2010 5-Series: 41, moderate
    2009 5-Series: 82, high
    2008 528 / 550 / M5: 76, moderate
    2008 535: 111, high
    2007 5-Series: 60, moderate
    2006 5-Series: 100, high
    2004 5-Series: 87, moderate, small sample size
    2003 5-Series: 101, moderate
    2002 5-Series: 115, moderate
    2001 5-Series: 89, moderate, small sample size
2000 5-Series: 60, low, very small sample size

We have two additional statistics, "Nada-odds" and "Lemon-odds", to indicate the percentage of cars with no repairs in the past year and those that required 3+ trips to the repair shop:

    2008 528 / 550 / M5: 45, 4
    2006 5-Series: 42, 4
    2002 5-Series: 28, 11

Additional participants always helpful (especially if you see "small sample size" next to the year, or no stat at all).

To view the repairs behind these numbers, check the stats for other cars, and sign up to help improve this information (next update in February):

New stuff this time. We've updated our reliability stats for the 5-Series to include owner experiences through the end of 2014. Plus we've added reliability trends graphs. These indicate how a model's reliability has changed as it has aged, and how different model years performed when the same age.

Repair frequencies, in terms of repair trips per 100 cars per year:

    2014 5-Series: 18, low
    2013 5-Series: 11, low
    2012 5-Series: 41, moderate
    2011 5-Series: 53, moderate
    2010 5-Series: 57, moderate
    2009 5-Series: 90, high
    2008 528 / 550 / M5: 78, moderate
    2008 535: 88, high
    2007 5-Series: 85, moderate
    2006 5-Series: 104, high
    2004 5-Series: 72, moderate
    2003 5-Series: 89, moderate
    2002 5-Series: 124, high
    2001 5-Series: 89, moderate, small sample size
2000 5-Series: 47, low, very small sample size

We have two additional statistics, "Nada-odds" and "Lemon-odds", to indicate the percentage of cars with no repairs in the past year and those that required 3+ trips to the repair shop:

    2008 528 / 550 / M5: 45, 3
    2006 5-Series: 36, 15
    2002 5-Series: 37, 8

We'll have further updates in May and in August. The more owners participate, the more comprehensive and precise these will be.

No wonder mine has been in the shop as many times as its been on the track, any correlation from the 540 to the 528?

I haven't looked into splitting powertrains for years other than the 2008. Usually they don't differ much, but if they seem to (based on the repairs posted to the site) I can.

So, how have these cars been doing lately?

Our reliability stats for the 5-Series now include owner experiences through March 31, 2015. (Others are nearly a year behind.)

In terms of repair trips per 100 cars per year ("low" is best):

    2014 5-Series: 13, low
    2013 5-Series: 18, low
    2012 5-Series: 39, moderate
    2011 5-Series: 63, moderate
    2010 5-Series: 77, high
    2009 5-Series: 84, high, small sample size
    2008 528 / 550 / M5: 96, high
    2008 535: 75, moderate
    2007 5-Series: 103, high
    2006 5-Series: 110, high
    2004 5-Series: 87, moderate
    2003 5-Series: 93, moderate
    2002 5-Series: 121, high
    2001 5-Series: 64, low, small sample size
2000 5-Series: 92, moderate, very small sample size

Plus, the percentage of cars with no repairs in the past year and those that required 3+ trips to the repair shop:

    2011 5-Series: 56, 4
    2008 528 / 550 / M5: 25, 7
    2006 5-Series: 37, 15
    2002 5-Series: 30, 8

No stat for a model year? Then we very much need more participants for it. Same for those with small sample size notes. Next updates in August and November.

Our reliability stats for the 5-Series now cover the year ending June 30, 2015. (Others are over a year behind, and so report how these cars were doing when a year younger.)

    Repair trips per 100 cars:

    2014 5-Series: 16, low
    2013 5-Series: 26, low
    2012 5-Series: 36, moderate
    2011 5-Series: 54, moderate
    2010 5-Series: 66, moderate
    2009 5-Series: 53, moderate, small sample size
    2008 528 / 550 / M5: 85, moderate
    2008 535: 95, high
    2007 5-Series: 98, high
    2006 5-Series: 95, moderate
2005 5-Series: 101, moderate, very small sample size
    2004 5-Series: 87, moderate, small sample size
    2003 5-Series: 79, low
    2002 5-Series: 128, high
    2001 5-Series: 47, low, small sample size
2000 5-Series: 76, low, very small sample size

We have two additional statistics, "Nada-odds" and "Lemon-odds", to indicate the percentage of cars with no repairs in the past year and those that required 3+ trips to the repair shop:

    2011 5-Series: 54, < 1
    2008 528 / 550 / M5: 36, < 1

If a model year isn't listed, or its sample size is small, then we especially need more owners involved.

We've updated our reliability stats for the 5-Series to include owner experiences through the end of 2015, about eight months ahead of other sources. In terms of repair trips per 100 cars per year--lower is better:

    2014 5-Series: 11, low
    2013 5-Series: 51, moderate
    2012 5-Series: 37, moderate
    2011 5-Series: 36, low
    2010 5-Series: 68, moderate
2009 5-Series: 55, moderate, very small sample size
    2008 528 / 550 / M5: 90, high
    2008 535: 110, high, small sample size
    2007 5-Series: 82, moderate
    2006 5-Series: 68, moderate
2005 5-Series: 75, moderate, very small sample size
    2004 5-Series: 108, moderate, small sample size
    2003 5-Series: 98, moderate
    2002 5-Series: 79, low
    2001 5-Series: 37, low, small sample size

We have two additional statistics, "Nada-odds" and "Lemon-odds", to indicate the percentage of cars with no repairs in the past year and those that required 3+ trips to the repair shop:

    2014 5-Series: 92, < 1
    2013 5-Series: 67, 4
    2011 5-Series: 72, < 1
    2008 528 / 550 / M5: 39, 7
    2006 5-Series: 47, 4

No stat or a small sample size? Then additional participants would be especially helpful for that year.

While I'm happy when anyone joins, I should note that the active survey goes back 15 model years. So currently back to 2001, and soon only back to 2002.

We don't cover earlier years because it's very hard to get enough owners involved and how the car was maintained make a huge difference.

Yup, any statistic is worthless unless you know the sampling and have verified the data. Properly defined repairs or breakdowns another needed criteria.
A thought that crossed my mind is that perhaps those with an ax to grind would over report problems, likewise the fans or those with vested interest could also manipulate in the opposite direction.
