I'm thinking of getting one myself. What made you get the 540i Sport? What did you drive prior to the purchase? Thanks in advance.

just posted in your other post...

    i didn't drive anything else

this is the ONLY car i looked at b4 buying it...

i knew i wanted the e39. particularly the 2003 with the m-sport package

i wanted to get AS low a mileage as possible.

when i saw this car in person and met the owner i knew it was the right car.

i love the way this car looks

and the best part is its entirely stock...

its also a bit more unique u don't see alot of 540i-msports out there...

specially in the sterling grey color.

i've always loved the e39 body style and even 10 yrs after it first came out itstill doesn't look dated...andtome thats a good signof a classic design i'm sure otherswill agree with me.

imo this car has a great combo of speed/luxury/handling.

other cars can do any one of those better but i believe this one does all of them best....

plus its auto so my wife can drive it as well.

there weren't many of these cars brought here...comparedto the other5's

so i think thatmakes itmore unique...

I'm jealous. I REALLY want an '03 M-Sport but am probably going '03 530i Sport Pkg. I'll be putting in serious Hwy miles and think the 530 will be considerably more economical and a bit more comfortable. Damn, I hate being practical!

If your miles are going to be on the highway the 540i may surprise you. My first highway trip in my 540i/6 averaged 22.6 mpg from Huston to Tucson, and I was running 80+ mph average for the trip. Yes, 540 is a little more cost at the pump, but it is so much more fun.

If you are going to drive it a lot, why not enjoy the drive?

thats true proper highway driving will get you 22 mpg...

its the stop and go shit that drops it down to 14-15mpg...

last week we went up to napa and driving on the highway around 75-85 i also averaged around 22mpg.

stop and go within the city and/or traffic dropped it down to 14-15 mpg.

gas mileage was a concern for me too

but i am not planning on driving it everyday (i commute 38 miles each way)

my wife will use it a few times a week. (she barely puts 150 miles a week on the cars)

if u can afford it buy a beater for a commuter and drive the 540i a few days a week thats what i'm doin!

Welcome aboard and congrats on the new 5er. So how much did you pick up this badboy up for? I am assuming you still have the CPO warranty until the 50k? I would recommened you get the extended warranty up until 100k, you will regret if you don't.

Forewarning: once you drive an E39 V8, you wouldn't want any other engine. What a sweeeet low end torque.

I love that color xxpanipuri has, but love the blue too. You can get 2000 or 2001 540i M sport at a reasonable price, then upgrade with M sport front spoiler later, and then some.

EDIT: I meant 540i sport package.

This past summer I drove home from South Bend, IN across Ohio on the Turnpike, most of the way on cruise control, and was completely surprised when it registered on the high 29's mpg before getting off the pike. Go Irish!

i believe because of the different rear axle in the 2003 540i m-sport the gas mileage is lower

    i paid 36,300 for it

put 10k down (including tax) and financed 29k for 5 yrs but i'm going to try to pay it off sooner....

bought it from a private party.....so its got the rest of the factory warranty till july

after that i'm going to buy an extended warranty just not sure which one....

and i'm also toying with the xtended maintenance...which is 1800 but we'll see about that one...

but extended warranties i will start lookin at in may...

i was seeing cpo'd cars at dealers but they were higher price and higher mileage...

this car was just TOO good to pass up it is in PERFECT condition

    seats show virtually no wear...

and one thing i thought about was my 2000 camry le v6 (daily driver)

which i bought new with 100 miles on the clock.

its got 165k miles on it but i thought about how it was at 27k miles and then how it was at around 47k miles

and so thats what made me go for this private party non cpo-d car...

    no way!

i'd never do such a thing to a BMW.....when is ee someone do that type of shit to a bimmer i seriously wanna pull over and beat the shit outta them!!

i'm not all about modding either i think the car is pretty much perfect the way it is...I MAY sometime down the road consider dinan chip/trans software MAYBE...

right now it feels hella fast to me! specially since i drive my 200hp camry to and from work.
