Hey Guys and Gals,
I'm in the middle of installing the VTMotorsport brake duct cooling kit. I just cut off the big rotor sized dust shield behind the rotor. However, the bit around the wheel bearing is still there:
So, questions:
1) Does this piece still need to be on there? If it does, how do you go about securing it into place after the stock rotor dust shield is gone?
2) if not, I guess just cut it off too?
Just don't want to screw this up, I dont' want to have to pull a wheel bearing right now (they're in good shape).
For reference:
-Bimmerworld's ducting kit install instructions
-Picture of Vahram's ducting kit complete (which is quite nice I might add):
Thanks,
Benjamin Hirsch

good to know (cleaning up the hub where the wheel speed sensor looks). .....getting there, this procject was a little more than I had bargained for, but it's a good one.

it's rather easy to take off the hub and wheel bearing, which is what i did. it takes all of an extra 10 minutes per side and you don't have to struggle with tin snips in small places

just an allen wrench. i removed the hub with the bearing inside and placed it in a clean spot, added more bearing grease when i put it back together
It's way more "fun" to cut the old shield off in place with a Dremel. I burned up or broke 5 cutting discs doing mine since I didn't have the right size socket handy. It was also an excuse to buy some aviation shears. They cut ANYTHING.
(Yes, I realize I could just buy the socket, but that's not nearly as fun as buying the shears.)
Smooth is fast. Loose is fast. I guess I need to learn to drive "lubed" since that's got to be really fast.
Looks like its time to get some new studs too
I ended up buying a craftsman angle grinder, 10,000 rpms, with a carbide cutting wheel, that thing made EASY work of the dust shield (backing plate0, now I'll just have to remove the bearing shield.
Yeah, I think it's time for some new studs, those are only a year old too!
Thanks,
