Best way to replace BMW Master Key....

I have a 1999 bmw 528i, what is the most cost effective way to place the master remote key? How much will it cost I was gonna go to the dealer on Wednesday. Thanks

~ 300 for key + programming if I recall correctly. Dealer would be best/only easy method, too.

    Key

I had to get my key from the dealer and I had to give them my vin, registration and driver's license to order my key. Make sure you bring all your keys to the dealer to program them all at the same time. The cost was $160 for the key and to have it cut.

That is rediculous just for a key and for them to program it.

If I lose my one key, will a dealer be able to make me a new one? (provided I bring my title, driver's license, first born)

yeah, but think of the hassle involved with losing that one key. Just get a second made. If you lock it in the car, it'll cost you that much just to get it out

So I just bought my wife a 1997 328i and it came with the secondary key (the one with the light). Is the dealership the only place I can go to get the master?

it's the only place to buy a key that will start the car due to it's EWS system. remember, the car can only support 10 keys per EWS.

registration in your name proving that you own the car/have authority to get keys. they will keep a copy of the documents since bmw na will audit them from time to time.

You need your license and reg to prove ownership. The dealer orders the keys from BMW and it takes a day or 2 to get them in. A non-remote EWS master key will be about $30. A remote master is about $150.

My Subaru can be started with a key from another Subaru made within a few years, probably with a screwdriver also.

I like knowing if someone's gonna steal my z4 they have to go to a lot more trouble.
Not so much a signature as a cry for help.

Hold on, saw this in a cartoon once...think I can pull it off.

You get them from the dealer and the key needs to be initialized for the key buttons to work. That takes about 1 minute
