    Thumbs up Stimpee's twin-screw

    Spent time with Steve Andersen (stimpee) yesterday and got to examine his twin-screw supercharger kit. Can't go into detail, but was very impressed. Even though a prototype, fit and quality of components (materials, finish, machining, etc) was first-rate. It appears to be exceptionally well-engineered and robust -- no corners cut and no band-aid solutions. Plus, it has an integrated intercooler and will be OBD-II compliant. Can't wait to see some dynos!!

    There won't be any pics until it is running and "near" release

    However once it is running, public showings and dyno charts will follow relatively quickly.

    Don't know what other news you are looking for. I am making good progress. Goal is still to have it running at/near end of year/month. However I am running into supply problems on 1-2 key components for the short term.

    Major hardware work is done. Detailed fitment issues and some minor plumbing, etc are in the process of being worked out.

    It's getting very close!!!

    Steve,

    Glad to hear of your good progress. The end of the year is right around the corner, so the excitement is mounting. Im dying to hear the details of the system and its components, and some performance numbers and prices. Just like everybody else, I guess. Interest is mounting, my friend. No turning back now :--)

    Not sure what you mean, or if you were joking, but I mean end of THIS year (just weeks away) to get it running. I am a bit behind schedule for that, but not horribly so. My biggest problem is finding one KEY component that I need. Everyone is out of stock and it is backordered

    I am as anxious as all of you to see how it works. Actually more so, since I have invested a ridiculous amount of time and money on this!!!!

    I think it is going to kick ass, but won't know until it is running!!!

    Here's a picture of a twin screw PD blower in a mid-engine Honda. Based on the large amount of structure along the longitudinal axis (which also happens to be parallel to the axis of rotation), it becomes obvious why the PD SC presents a problematic fitment issue in an M3 engine bay, which is probably why all the initial M3 SCs used a centrifugal SC (which is considerably more compact, but has all the deficiencies of a centrifugal vis-a-vis the twin-screw). Can't wait to see a photo of Stimpee's prototype blower in situ!

    I've got a general question on Twin Screw Setups.

    Steve, I know your setup is going to be intercooled. I'm guessing it will be an air/water setup. Seems like all the twin screw setups I see are arranged where the S/C unit is bolted straight to an intake manifold. Are all the setups I've seen non-intercooled? Or do some twin screw units have 'built-in' intercoolers?

    Basically, I'm curious to know what the intercooler setups look like for twin-screw applications because it seems like everytime I see them on a car, they are bolted straight to the manifold. I'm always trying to find a core somewhere in between the compressor and manifold but have never spoted one.

    I know you probabily don't want to release your specs yet but I'm really hoping you are going to be using a beefy core unlike the RMS setup which has a less than optimal CFM flow rating for the applications they use them in.

    Without getting into too much detail, most of the PD kits do NOT include intercooling due to the difficulty in incorporating and packaging it. I concur with that "easy" approach, since it has taken a LOT of effort to make it work. HOwever, I was not willing to follow the easy path!!!

    Anyway, the IC setup I am using is very comfortably good to 425+ horsepower, and beyond that just begins adding unwanted pressure drop. However I have some ideas on how to increase that capacity if needed, but have little or no plans to do so, since I don't plan to get into setups which exceed that hp level due to the limitations of the DME. 400+ hp with TONS of torque down low will be adequate for almost anyone's "need for speed".

    Also, I will be measuring both temperature and pressure drop across the intercooler, and will understand what the strengths and weaknesses are of the system as it comes together...

    Steve took a look (and some photos) of the engine compartment of my 99 M Coupe during last Sunday's visit. Although there may need to be some minor, primarily plumbing-related changes related to the intercooler, fit in the Z3 Coupe/Roadster shouldn't be a problem.

    This means that a liquid to air "charge air cooler" is integrated into the intake manifold/SC "sandwich".
