Question Purchase Advice on E39 ///M5

Advice needed: I've got a friend who is actively looking to buy a E39 M5. Currently he is looking at the 00 year based on price.

Are there any mechanical, recall or service related items I should be concerned about?

If anyone has or knows of one for sale - please post.
(chicago area would be best - but not required)

Did you try to post over in the 5 series forum? You might get better answers there..........

I'd go for the '00 ... the '99 was the first production run. It may have "bugs".
Let me get this straight... You are swapping out parts designed by hundreds of engineers that get paid thousands of dollars for something you bought at Pep Boys because your buddy who doesn't have a job told you it was 'better'?!?

Uhm, 99 was for Europe. The M5 was released in the US in 2000. There are have been no recalls with the M5. But is your friend aware that there is a difference between the 2000 and 2001 M5?

Yes my friend is aware of the differences between the years; at least from a features/functional standpoint. I'm much more interested in problems that may exist in the 00 and 01s.

Thanks all for the replies. I think ///Mr Three is right - I should have posed in the 5 series form for these answers.
