Pass seat occupancy sensor. Take it to the dealer.

Actually it is probably exactly what it says it is. A problem with the passenger seat belt or airbag. A readout of the SRS system will probably pinpoint the fault. An E60 will almost certainly be under warranty, so take it to a dealer.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

It is not under warranty, so I'd like to avoid a dealer.

Does the e60 use an a standard SRS tool? If so, I need to make a post over in the CA forum ...

You can install the parts yourself but you have to have the dealer enable the seat mat for you. The seat has to come out though. then the leather on the seat bottom has to come off then the sensor mat comes out. Try if you want.

the problem is the occupancy sensor, right? go to www.realoem.com, find the part number for it and look at the diagrams to see if you can DIY- I dunno.

The seat mat is just my assumption by knowing how many of them have gone bad. doesn't mean it is the problem without first reading the car.

I agree with achterberg. I have had one or two of the E60 come in with that fault that is the seat belt tensioner. The other 5,000 car were the seat occupancy detector. There is a light in your headliner where your sunroof switch is. When no one is in the seat a yellow message shoudl be illuminated saying air bag deactivated. If you sit in the seat and that light stays on the seat mat is bad. There is a "but" to this. If the vehicle has had a software update I think the light is deactivated after a couple of seconds of vehicle start up. Just try and see I guess.

you will have to go to dealer anyways.... let them enable the mat before you install it.
