I do not know the last time the oil in my BMW was changed. I assume it was a little while ago. Its a nice day so I thought I would change the oil. Before I do so, I just wanted to ask other members what viscosity level they put in their e28 BMW.
This is an original cruiser, no mods done.
Thanks.

Castrol GTX 5-50.....
I'd use a synthetic, Redline or Motul 5W40.
They cost about$7/qt from thelinks below

xW50 in the summer and xW40 in the winter sounds perfectly reasonable with an off-the-shelf oil like Castrol Syntec.
And a dose of www.auto-rx.net and www.lubecontrol.com wouldn't hurt either...
It you look thru the Auto-RX FAQ their's a discount code.
wait, here's the link www.auto-rx.com/arxfq.htm

Double-Check your owner's manual, you'll find that 15W40 is winter oil and 20W50 is what's preferred at 30F+
15W40 is a HDEO (Deisel engine oil). Probably all that was out there back then.
A modern 10W40 dino oil should work fine.
Better yet use a modern 5W40 synthetic, most of those are good for turbo-deisels anyhow. And for the most part that's a good thing.
IMHO, a syn 5W40 will probably protect all well as a dino 20W50.
But I prefer synthetics.
The only way to now for sure is to do virgin and used oil analysis.

PS.
Motul and Redline are mostly GrpV, Ester oils.
And esters are better.
They're polar so they stick to metal, and they have a natural cleansing property so they'll clean off old oil varnish.
AND they naturally cause seals (gaskets) to swell which helps control leaks leaks (seepage if you own a British car ).
Auto-RX is a natural ester an helps in all of the above areas.

my only concern is the higher engine speeds when using a "diesel specific" 15-40, as those are the only ones available around here.

I'm using Liqui Moly 10w40 at the moment. Might change that to 20w50 in May in preparation for the hot summer months.
From what I have read the M30 likes the thicker oil due to the wider bearing tolerances vs. the modern cars that need ultra thin oil.
