What do you need this fluid for ?
This fluid is simply Dexron III type transmission lubricant as any other Dexron III fluids avilible at any automotive store across North America (this stuff is not even synthetic !).Just "brain wash" by BMW company to spent money for "special fluid " which can not be replaced with anything else- bull shit !!!
Read link below to know more about this miracle juice :

You can use Castrol Dexron III or also Unocal Dexron III. My local auto parts store sells Lubro Moly ATF III which I use in our 325is/318ti (manuals). Good fluid.

I'm pretty sure a high quality Dexron III will work...generally Dexron is Dexron.

I would not use any... My car also was filled with Texaco fluid. I contacted Chevron/Texaco North America and was told the closest match to this particular fluid made in European Union , is Havoline Mercon V made by Texaco USA as a matter of fact this Mercon stuff is semi synthetic. That is what I use for one year already with no problems and only $3.00 per quart/ litre(you need 7-8 qurts).Basicly Mercon V formulations are multivehicle ATF`s.Castrol Multivehicle ATF , Quaker State/Penzoil Multivehicle will work good as well for this particular GM 5 BMW auto transmission and are approved for these cars by mentioned oil companies.

    I wouldn't use Dexron/Mercon III where Texaco 7045E went.
    I don't think I'd use MerconV either. http://theoildrop.server101.com/ubb/...=002116#000000

I wonder what other choices there are.

But, going by Nemesis's cars, a 1999 323i doesn't take Texaco ATF, it uses Dexron/Mercon III.

ok. I take that back. D/M3 should work fine.

I wonder why GM spec'ed a slightly different fluid?
What was wrong with regular D/M3?

Yes I read the think and it leads me to believe that it is basically the same fluid.

The indicate General Motors Dexron III in parenthesis after the name of the Texaco fluid!

However, to add more confusiong, the Bentley Manual says that a Green label on the transmission means to use Texaco ETL 8072B.

There is a part number for the transmission fluid I just got of the transmission that sasys 83220002121 printed on a green label with the warning about never changing the lifetime fluid. According to the Bentley manual, this part number doeas not match the part number for the ETL 7045e or the 8072B!

    Any thoughts?

bump! would anyone here suggest Castrol's Multivehicle ATF for a 2000 528ita with build date 12/1999? Is MercV really an equivalent of Texaco ETL7045E?

If you need to just top off the tranny fluid, i recommend getting the exact fluid that was in before. If your doing a fluid flush or drain (unbolting pan, cleaning magnets) Dexron III is sufficient. You can buy this anywhere, pepboys, autozone, advanced auto. I will be doing this really soon and I'm using Castrol Import Multi-Vehicle ATF, which is Dexron III and compatible with BMW LA2634, LT71141. Meets ATF+3. I will post my results.

300 hundred miles with new fluid, and shifts like butter.

My 2003 325i has the GM 390R tranny and I went with the Vavoline Dexron VI (6), which is full synthetic. Shifts smoother even at 116K miles. This is the BMW part # for the Tex 8072B fluid which my trans called for 83 22 0 024 359...key that into pelicanparts or Tishners and it shows to be superseded with this number 83220397114...which is Dexron VI. Don't know the brand but DexVI is DexVI. Anyway, the Valvoline Dex VI has worked great with no issues.

Some much conflicting info....ETL 7045 is what my 328i with the GM trans calls for part # 83220002121.

My best buddy is an Allison Trans service manager; he has endless resources when it comes to trans data etc. He is familiar with Texaco fluids and said the ETL is an Extended Trans Life fluid and is a 100% synthetic product.

Just to be safe when I changed my fluid last month I purchased the fluid & filter from the dealer all $202 worth

I stuck with the original / BMW-recommended Texaco fluid, purchased from BavAuto.

Valvoline Maxlife Multi-Vehicle ATF is rated for both GM and ZF E46 transmissions in all instances - 7045E, ETL 8072B, LA2634, and LT71141
