My S38B36 Turbo Build Thread

Check last page for newest updates

The original post was kind of irrelevant as I've bumped this up on my priority list, check later in the thread for the newest updates.

Here are some photos from earlier this year, picking up my $500 M5, pulling the engine, sitting on the stand etc.

Jon (UrineMachine) and I picking the car up.

Lots of random stuff. (Thankfully we finally decided the barn could be a much nicer work place and we've since been cleaning so we could potentially get 3 cars in, or 2 with tons of work room).

    Yay for milkshakes!

Engine pulled out, sitting on the stand, parts collected off the chassis that I wanted to keep, the rest was sold off for a profit. Total investment so far is in the black (not for long).

that's a great project engine. check out some of andreas' s38s for some inspiration. if i had space and time, that would be my project engine of choice - high compression pistons (okay, low compression if you're going turbo), some hot cams and a big carbon fiber intake box. makes me tingle just thinking about it.

What's wrong with the e34 M5 it came out of? It looks relatively kosher in the front...why not rebuild it?

It was mostly parted out, the rear has a hit to it, and I'd rather do something stupid

And I have to many project cars to be rebuilt.

Good luck can't wait to see what ends up coming from this project. Any idea on what turbo/manifold your going to use? BTw Who's doing the rebuild? Becarful on who you choose to do it.

Custom manifold, GT35R (havent decided between .82 and 1.06). The rebuild is going to be a combination of a local shop and myself. I know from dealing with my pcar's to be careful who I goto.

Few more pics from today, almost done tearing down the engine.

    More wheel restoration work.

    GREAT WORK there man

I cant wait to see how this one progresses.

Do you have the cylinder head for this engine??

as Andreas says they thrive with a bigger turbo...>GT 40 / 42R R would also go well IMO

What engine work are you getting done apart from the basics?

andreas, here's my thought process behind the smaller turbo. I'd like pretty quick spool-up, and enough breathing room for 600-650hp which is pushing the limits of the GT35. However this is most likely replacing my 951 as my road course/track day car and as cool as it is to spin the tires at 80mph, I want to put the power down. I'm more than open to suggestions, you just have to explain to me WHY you think that

As for the engine/machine shop. It came without a head, but I have a new one sourced, just need to sell some stuff so I can pick it up. Like I said long term project The block is going to the machine shop, having the bottom end assembled and the deck straightened (no idea if it is or not, but I have no problem with them carving a slight bit off). I'll probably have the pistons done at Swaintech, just because I'm a sucker for fancy coatings.

It might go in an e30 for shakedown, I know what I want to put it in. It's just a matter of finding one that's a good canidate. You guys will be the first to know when I have one.

Spool is not a problem with S38
I have full boost at 3500rpm with PT76.

    GT35R don´t support 600-650hp at 14psi.
You have 600-700 at 14psi with right turbo.

Hmmm, I'm not set on what I'm buying. Basically I want 600-650 at around 18-20psi with a decent spoolup. I dont want to go to T-Bigmotherfawker sizes though, if I can avoid it. Not trying to be arguementative, trying to learn

Why replace the 951? I cant wait to get my hands on one in the near future...are you tired of dealing with reliability issues/inability to make huge power? (though special tool is closing in on 600rwhp on a Mustang Dyno)

No, I just figure in 3-4 years when I have the bimmer squared away I wont need two track cars, I'm not 100% getting rid of the 951. I have the same turbo as Jim (tool) on my 951, a bigger intercooler and standalone, I suspect I'll put out slightly less than his with the headwork/cam. Nothing is garunteed yet. Maybe I'll put a full interior back in the 951 and daily it like I used to.
