I just went thru 2 coolant lever sensors on my 95 M3, the deal was according to a BMW tech at the dealer, that the old sensors tend to go bad quicker than the new style sensors. The cut off date for the old sensors is 6/95. All cars produced before this date share the old sensor and you need to do to fix this problem is retrofit it to the new style sensor, here Im gonna list all the parts you will need for this upgrade, it really simple and better if your car was built before 6/95 this includes 325's also,
61-13-8-365-340 Plug 1 each
61-13-0-005-199 Contacts 2 each
61-13-1-379-833 Heat shrinking covers for covering the wires 2 each
61-13-8-353-746 Connectors 2 each
61-31-8-360-855 Switch (this is the sensor itself)
Procedure is very easy, just splice the wires and use the new connector, that easy. I just did it and no more problems so far with that annoing "check coolant level" message on the OBC anymore.
Why the heck doesn't the manufacturer just make the newer, better sensors with the old style plugs?
Awesome info, thanks! Will have to remember that one.

I know, those old style sensors are just junk, well you should know this already. Besides the new style sensor and connector looks nice and modern, the old one is big as sh.. the connector that is. Once you have both sensors side by side you could tell the difference, new one has better design.Originally Posted by JamesM3M5

i have a 99 M3, and still get the check coolant on the OBC.. fluid levels are fine.. 71K on the odo

Well you have the newer sensor on yours stock, but at 71k I think it needs replacement already, it's only like $22 at dealer
On my car the connector that clips into the sensor had a broken contact so I had to fix the connector not the sensor...
I replaced my coolant level sensor a couple months back to get rid of the message with the new style you show there. Guess what? It's back again! About the same regularity as before too.
Aggravating, yes. I wonder if it's a grounding issue now.
Yeah mine has been popping up every now and then. Usually when it's cold out and I 1st start, but then it shuts off after about a min of running. Or sometimes when I shut the car off it pops up. Kinda weird. Car is a 99 with 43,000 in it.

Or if you were wanting to remove the coolant sensor all together, there is a cap for the tank that you can use. (far a race/track car obviously)

if it was that easy people would just unplug the sensor but leave it in the resivor right?Originally Posted by ceegeezM3
