"Thing/switch" near engine bay batt terminal on my 97 M3????

I am out of town and can't post a pic
I have a ugly switch that is mounted at the site of the battery terminal at the rear pass side of my engine bay. Has a cannister object and bracket with a swtich mounted on top. Any idea what this is? I haven't really even checked it for voltage...

Switch is for the factory alarm if the hood is opened.

    Near the battery terminal?

Hmmm... the two "hood" switches I have are in the front

This is near the firewall where the jump terminals are, back left corner of the engine bay facing the front of the car. There is a small level there and a cannister looking device with a few wires connected to the big battery cables with the little box with + on it. I will take a pic when I get home this weekend.

    OK here is the thing.
    It controls the interior lights...
Does not shut of engine but voltage seems to drop...maybe the alternator is switched. Car is supercharged and has an electric fan so I will trace the wires.

Actually I guess it is a 12V kill switch.
I did not try to hit the starter with the switch off. Guess with the motor running the taking out the battery would cause the drain I described.
