    99 M Coupe (stock) vs. LS1 Camaro

So I decide to take little drive in the Coupe last night after the gym since it was such a nice night out. I'm going down 273 here in DE, heading towards Newark when a shined up LS1 merged next to me from the 95S off ramp. We stop at a light and he pulls in behind me. He sporting just an exhaust AFAIK.
The light changes and I move over to the left to get around this slow poke in front of me. At the same time, Mr. LS1 changes too and decides to ride my ass. UNCOOL.
So I punch it and leave him way back. He doesn't follow. As I'm tooling along, he slowly reappears and ends up next to me at a light. I'm trying to see the green, but the roofline on the Coupe is blocking my view; I have to crane my neck to see it.
It turns green, and he rolls by me, windows down and gives me a look. I turn off the ASC and we are at ~15mph (1st), I'm at his rear bumper. At this time I punch it and get to his door before he punches it and puts me back to his bumper.
I stay there up to ~70 where he backs off and I roll by. He yells something over to me, but I have no idea what he said.
He appeared to be about 20 and chock full of teenage testosterone, so I give him a wave and he's a bit puzzled. I guess he expected me to be mad or something, like he just emasculated me....

Oh well, I continue on, and eventually he passes again, I give him a wave and he waves back.

No shame in not keeping up with a manual LS1, right?

No shame, I am buying a 2000 SS this saturday. These things RIP! I am sure though with a few Mods, you can give him a run for his money. Do a lil work and I will race you

No shame at all. Low 13's for an LS1 f-body with a good driver...

No man no shame at all. Stock for stock and both with good drivers, an M coupe and an LS1 Fbody are with a few tenths of each other. Id say the nod for lower speed races going to the M and up into the triple digits the LS1 sorta comes into its own. Way to hang in there. Im still lookin for my first M coupe race. The few times ive seen them and gotten in a position to race it was some older dude who just looks at me like i asked him if i could have sex with his teenage daughter. So it goes. I'll have my day though. Peace. :

Just to add my own datapoint:

'01 3 Liter Coupe vs LS1 6-speed... Raced from a stoplight, I cut a nice launch, he spun hard. I was out front until about 80 MPH when we had to shut it down because we were coming up on traffic.

I was in front, but he was pulling HARD! Those LS1s are bad ass. And if the driver knows what they're doing, they're brutally fast.

But my easy to launch 3 Liter did pull out and hold the lead to 80 or so...

*click* *clink*... Putting pennies into a jar to save up for a supercharger...

Yep if we slip the launch, its not uncommon for cars in the E36 M3 class to hold door to door (or even ahead a bit) till about 70 or so. Thats where things get fun in an LS1. If i only raced from 70 there would much fewer cars to have to worry about. Peace. :

PHATNA-Z: Totally agree, and don't want to start some pissing war. I know my car is nowhere near as fast as an LS1 can be. But in street racing, it's all about the launch - especially since most Stop Light Grands Prix only last to 70-80 MPH...

I do have wet dreams about putting an LS1 in my car! Sometimes I think about how much the supercharger kits cost, how much tuning and such is required, how on-the-edge the engines are... And it makes me dream about good, ol' V8 ease.

Lol, no pissin war intended. Im not the type for that, if i disagree i get it out in the open and work it out as fast as possible. Thats not why i posted what i posted. I simply was stateing that although not as fast over a longer period of time, this particular class of Bimmers does very well at "around town" speeds. Which brings us back to your statement about the launch. Indeed, if you wanna win street races, get good off the line and you will. Ive raced many a car that i beat that had the race stopped at say 70, i may not have lost but i sure as hell wouldnt have won by near the same margin. Oh yeah.....an LS1 in a Bimmer. LOL that would be somethin. I dont even wanna think about the fabrication work involved there. Till next time. Peace. :

Why not an LS1 in a Bimmer?

Think about how much a *GOOD* forced induction setup costs... With all the options and other little things you need that aren't included in the cost of the kit, I'd say you're looking at prolly $10K-12K with installation and tuning.

Then look at how much a used LS1 costs on EBay. $3K? I know companies make "street-rod" wiring kits to install an LS1 standalone into just about anything you can dream up. So why not slap that MONSTER of a motor into a very deserving Z3 Coupe chasis?

The engine (with auto) will run prolly $3-4K. You can maybe make back a few hundred selling off the auto tranny - we're going six speed, thanks. So that's another $2K for a T56, $3K for a Richmond. So let's say $6K for LS1 + six speed. That leaves you with $4-6K to do the swap - speaking in terms of being competitive with a good FI setup. I have to think it can be done for less than that!

[EDIT] And you get to sell off your BMW engine/tranny when you're done with the swap to recoup some of the costs, too. How much would a 3 Liter/5 spd combo go for? [/EDIT]

And here's the best part - the starting point for a stock LS1 is right about the RWHP of what a good FI setup makes... And the sky is the limit for power with those LS1s!!! So for the same money, instead of being topped out on power with FI, you're just getting started with the LS1.

Yeah, new motor mounts would need to be fabbeb, ditto tranny mounts. Custom driveshaft, etc. But I've heard that the E36 chasis (upon which the Z3 chasis is derived) can take the BMW V8s and V12s even, so there must not be any structural bits in the way.

I've seen pics of an E30 with an LS1 in it, so I know it can work. Hell, if anything, the E30 engine bay is even smaller.

And we've all seen crazier things - like the old Miata with a 5.0 trick.

I've got some serious LS1 envy!

I can tell you from multiple accounts that an LS1 pulls rather hard and abruptly right into its 162 mph top speed limiter. Not to toot my own horn, but there are few cars on the road that will stay along side an LS1 on the highway. Its just stupid how fast this thing gets from 80 to 130, and it aint bad after that. Your thinking of the LT1, which yes it was rather sluggish up top. I can only imagine what one might do in a Z series Bimmer. Look at my hp/tq figures compared to Dave's and i guess you get some idea. : Peace. :

I really want an LS1 BAD!!!

PHATNA-Z: I guess the real world data we have with your car and Dave's proves the old drag racer's saying that "100lbs = 0.1 secs" in a 1/4 mile... You both have nearly exactly the same RWHP, Dave's car is ~500lbs lighter, and so it's 0.5 secs faster...

    Ain't science great?

Oh, and have I mentioned I want an LS1 really bad lately?

Yep them damn mullet mobiles are pretty quick. I do recall keeping up with GTS Vipers and 996TTs in the summer. Given, they were not the greatest of drivers.
My 99 was a 6 speed and pulled 13.0 at 110 in the quarter. Not bad for a couple bolt ons.

Still gotta love the Mroadster. Nothing like that wide ass and Quad pipes. Looks almost as evil as a Ram air WSR6. Which brings back the BAT, Now that i wouldnt mind. I have seen plenty of videos of them handing R1's their asses. When you see a car pulling on a bike and the car WITH A fat ass for a passenger you almost shit yourself. Iam I biased or is the Pontiac nicer in looks as well as faster. Gimme a triple black and I would be smiling, wouldnt trade the M for it though.

Yeah....what the hell is a BAT? And for the Pontiac, it does have more extreme looks and thats better to some. To each their own right. But faster....not a bit. In fact, of the 4 LS1 Pontiacs ive raced (2 at the track, 2 on the street) i have yet to get a look at any of their tail lights. Peace. :

Just slap an s/c on your 3.0 and learn how to launch, and you'll have want for nothing...

The main reason my times are what they are over Phatna's car is weight, and my tires, and track prep, and 60' times, etc....

But make no mistake, there's no replacement for displacement, his LS1 is down-right relaxed versus my frenetic little 3.0...
