I am getting tired of my '00 328i and a huge reason is the automatic transmission.. :/ and the power!! So I've been doing my research and I am digging the e36 m3 coupe I am currently working 2 jobs and plan on selling my e46 in march. What do yall think? or should I just sell and get an e46 w/ manual and the swap cost waaaaaaay to much and is waaaay to challenging.. give me some input?
I went from a 2K 328i with SP & PP + auto trans to a E36M3 sedan 5sp about 3 years ago. Best move I ever made. Good lucking finding a E36 M3 sedan 5spd in decent condition! If you do, get ready to pay >$15K for a sub 100K mile specimen.
im trying to get a coupe, but I think I'll be pleased. How does the insurance compare? Just curious
It dropped a bit, by $50 for a 6 month pre-me-um. The E36M sedan costs $$$ to rebuild when in an accident and will most likely be totaled. E36M3 Coupes are ghey unless they are rare builds or fabric interiors! Sedans hold value like you wouldn't believe! But it's up to you! Good luck!

Sedans are like soccer mom vans, only it's the guy's version lol.
Why so much hate on the sedan?
I totally agree (and admit that I'm biased). But that's why I bought a sedan, in addition to wanting to look like a "soccer dad" (whatever). I know some have said the windshield is more upright. Obviously it's got more doors (and they're shorter and have a window frame), but I am a bit stumped as to why the lines on the sedan are so significantly better IMO.
Current:

Sorry, I missed your humor.
I don't have a dog in this fight, but low production numbers doesn't necessarily equal higher value or desirability. As much as anything, low production numbers indicate a lack of demand during the years of manufacture.
And if someone is buying a E36 M3 as an investment, they are making a serious mistake.

The sedan is perfectly balanced front to rear. The front fenders shorter, front doors pushed forward, short doors, with taller roof, and the whole car slightly narrower.
The coupe is nose heavy with long front fenders, doors and a short looking trunk - a bit awkward.
There's no contest

What is this, the Twilight Zone??? Get the coupe for sure. And the sedans are the same money as the coupes; they're all worth less than 10k unless it has really low miles.
I'd say if you shop around finding a super clean one w/ respectable miles for less than $8k shouldn't be a problem at all. I picked my coupe up last May for $6500 and it had all service records and has never seen snow; the undercarriage is perfect and there's no rust anywhere on the car. Mine had about 120k ish miles on it. I am right in the middle of having the rear diff rebuilt, but even after that's done I'll have $7500 into it and it will be perfect. Pretty sure the PO had no idea about it because it only started making noise on me about a month or so ago and I drive it every day. I've put about 15k miles on it since I picked it up. VERY fun to drive.
lol maybe according to you. I prefer the coupe.
as for e36m from e46 328. Itll be a great move provided you find a well kept e36m. I drive my bosses (modded)e46 330 quite a bit and its meh by comparison.

Just for the record this was a joke just as the other guy said coupes are ghey... No need for anyone to get the pantys in a bunch.Originally Posted by RatedM3

To me it seems that E36M prices have been increasing over the last year or so. Maybe this is just happening in the Bay Area.
I disagree. I think rare builds are always going to be worth more, even more so now that the production numbers are known.
It's OK, no one is perfect.
I'd love to pick up a vert--love the lines.
