Did you use the spray stuff?
I used spray cans, yes.
Took all the moldings off, cleaned them with a mild degreaser, dried them thoroughly and then sprayed them all. I gave it heaps of coats (maybe 6) to be sure they held up to abuse. In hindsight that probably wasn't necessary, 3 or 4 coats would be fine. IIRC I used two cans for the side (not window) moldings.
The good thing with dip is it's easy to remove if you need to and the texture of the base material is preserved so they look like OE.

+ good stuff
I put M3 Moldings on mine, but left the rear bumper strip which was faded. I used Ultimate Black on it. Every time I use it the color stays black longer. Those products aren't something that makes them stay black with one application. Repeated applications get good results.
My trim is falling off so I'm just replacing with OE. Bit of a money pinch since we just bought a house, so only replacing what is falling off right now. Will finish up the rest when I can.
You can get a full set of OEM M3 side trim for $180 which includes the clips and grommets pre-installed.
