My E21 in BMW Car Magazine

    Hey,

Thought people might enjoy seeing my E21 that I have been working on over the past 8 years. Little by little it has been transformed into what I wanted to use that car for. It's in the February edition - enjoy. I will try to post some pics If I figure out how.

The exhaust works well, if a little loud. It means I had to take out one of the fuel tanks. As this is primarily a track car it doesn't much matter.

Very nice car. Cage design looks good. You do all the fab work yourself? I'll be bugging you a ton if you did. I love how you rock the US spec style, in everyone's FACE! Everyone is so fixated on euro stuff (msyelf included). It's a rugged race car that is very cleanly done. Kudos to you.

Buy bent tube and resonantors, remove gas tank, cut, weld, hang. I built an exhaust too. It's not really rocket science, just a little time consuming.

The exhaust was the least complicated thing in the entire build... It was simply a matter of measuring, assembly tacking and then weling. I was lucky as I had the use of a lift and a transmission jack.

I left the cage design and fabricaition work to an expert. He used to build cages for WRC cars including Ford and Audi in the crazy turbo era. I can send you his email if you are interested. The euro look / us spec thing is a bit funny. When I lived in Canada I used to want to have only euro parts on the car. I live in the UK now and the US stuff is very rare here. The car is primarily about function over form ( the US bumbers ad mounts weigh a lot and are infrom of the front axel) but I like the way the front air dam links up with the bumpers. I might have wanted to close up the sideways "," holes in the bumper if the car was for show but as it will be used for track days I am not rally that bothered and even think it looks a bit agressive.
I like your web site with all the work you have done on your truck. I can not imagine reconstructing the frame on my truck. I have a defender and I am preparing to take to Morroco for an overland trip in April.

    Hi

I bought the mag on the basis of your car, as Iam building a e21 race, I have a few questions about the car, were did you get the front disks, did custom cages do the cage, and do you want to buy a quick rack kit, and will you ever come as far as scotland?

The disks and callipers were purchased used; they came from an M3 rally car. The biggest problems were the hubs and the carriers. Both of these were made by Baz Cannon, in the mag he is at the end of the article. Baz also did the cage. I would be interested in a quick rack kit at the existing one is stock and a bit slow. I actually work in Edinburgh during the week! I haven't had a change to take the car out properly since it was built but I don't see why I wouldn't take it to Scotland! What are the good tracks up there?

That is a very good example of what I want to do with an E21. Track, but street if direly needed. Kudos on the build and the magazine dealio. I'm gonna buy an issue this week. Once again. Kudos.

P.S. Kinky to have the U.S. bumpers when all of us U.S. boys are obsessed with euro bumpers. I like.

Car looks awesome man. Looks like you have an awesome little track setup especially with the s14. I love how you are rocking the rear US spec bumper but why not just remove it to cut down on weight if it is for strictly track use? Looks good

Can someone please post this correctly!

I have updated the post with some roll cage build photos if anyone is interested. The tires (tyres) are indeed Toyo T1-s 205 45 17. I use them for wet weather track days. I uses to have 13" slicks on the original basket weave rims but the brakes have forced me to get something else. I am currently looking at alternatives. The wheels must be 17" to clear the brakes...

The suspension uses to be a bilstein shocks /Eibach springs, a very nice set up that worked well on the road and on the track untill my wife and I became alot faster on the track.

The current set-up is custom coil over springs front and rear. Modified Leda 3 way adjustable rear and Bilstein shocks. The shocks fronts will be changed soon to fully adjustable units.
