You have to do your online work. Now its an incredibly smooth machine and after lots of sweat and about 3 to 4 grand in parts and repairs I am sure I can get about 800 dollars for it. But I like it, so whats that worth. Driving down the road with music in fourteen speakers, ride like a cloud, worn leather seats. If only that trans prog light would give it a rest. I get the oil changed locally for less than 200 dollars. Tires are hard to find, ones that are safe with atwo ton car at 110 MPH.
I drive it about 50 miles per week and truly enjoy it, and the money, well, yeah, it's bad. Did I mention it's getting rusty? It could be yours for 1,250.
$200 for an oil change on one of these is crazy. Even if you're using full synthetic

Using the above formula you could conclude most buyers of new 7 series want the very best performance and money is not an important variable. This does not leave a big audience for the second hand market, reducing demand and (thankfully for us second or third hand buyers) reduces price. That is until we try to sell our used 7 to a small market size.

My first car when I was 17 was a 1989 735i I paid $500 and the whole 9 years I had it the water pump was the only thing that needed work... 2016 I got my 1995 740i for $300 not running, took it to BavarianAuto and got another DME rebuild ($706.59) no problems yet.

1995 is the best year in terms of reliability, you can't kill an M60. Fresh fluid in the trans and it'll stay good too.

I think the factory price sticker should be under the rear seat.

I love driving my E38 ('98 740iL) but it always seems to have something wrong with it, whether big or little. The reliability is not one of its strong points.
On the other hand I bought it five years ago for just $3600 with 133k miles... so I'm willing to turn wrenches and put a couple grand into it over the years.

But I would have had serious misgivings if I'd known about the timing chain guide problem with M62's... now at 163k miles and someday the rattles will start. $700 in parts and 22 book hours to change I'd gladly sacrifice a few hp for a bulletproof M60.
