aux fan on E30, after AC removal, do we need it?

    Ok,

after removing the ac and condensor, I ordered all the brackets to mount the aux. fan back in the same area.

do we need this Aux fan? or just remove it to save more weight.

this is a track car that sees streets once a week.

    thanks

It's nice to have so you don't cook when sitting still (gridded, traffic, etc) and for post-run cool downs, but not 100% necessary.

When I had an E30, I did it the other way around...removed the main fan and wired the aux fan to come on via the old AC switch.

yep. you should be able to plug the aux fan right back into the same plug that you disconnected it from, though. I ended up having to bypass the resistor on the fan to get mine to work.

When I removed the AC on my e30 I basically 'hollowed out' the condensor with an air saw. Removes most of the weight and allows you to still use the stock mounting frame.
This was with my M50, so I wasn't able to fit the clutch fan. With the aux fan on a manual switch, I never had any problems with the car overheating-- barely got over 1/2 temp even when sitting in traffic on 100 degree Summer days.

    European E30 M3s without air-conditioning didn't use a mechanical fan at
all. All they had was the push-type electric fan in front of the radiator.
Cars with A/C (all U. S. versions) used both.

Most of us that race our cars remove the mechanical fan and the A/C
condenser. The electric fan can then be mounted using the European brackets (total cost less than $10). If you would like to have both fans Spal makes electric pull-type fans that can be mounted behind the radiator but you'll have to fabricate brackets.

Good to know. Thanks for the part numbers, I'll have to pick those up and use them on the new build.
