    Peake Research Fault Code Reader

Has anyone used one of these? I am in the UK and when I try to use mine I get an E on the display when checking for error codes. I have been in contact with Peake in the USA whose remedies have not worked and they say I will have to go to my dealer as I have a diagnostic impairment ie the car diagnostics are not talking to the reader. The car, a 318iSE Touring, 1998, 12700 miles with fbmwsh is going perfectly well and shows no error codes.
Can anyone help as I have no wish to go to the dealer as I can do most of my own servicing now the warranty is over?
    Many thanks in anticipation.
    Roger.

Could the reader be dead? Do it's other functions work?
