that first car should be making a fair bit more power than it is....those numbers aren't unheard of for a stock car.

I thought the same about my own car, but this dyno seemed to be of the heartbreak type. Cars that were claiming high hp #'s were humbled that day such as Supras that had previously dynoed 1000 hp elsewhere making high 800's, low 900's. Our friend's E39 M5 made 328/330, we thought he would make more too.

Can you post the dyno sheets or email me the DRF files (if the shop gave them to you?)

First car sounds like maybe the cam timing didn't get set properly in the rebuild.

Funny u say that, cuz the car originally had a ltw flywheel after the rebuild and they couldn't get timing correct so they put the stock flywheel back on and had it timed at the dealership instead. So we know timing is correct now. They didn't give us any sheets/files at the dyno, just the screen readout.

Lame. I never use a lock pin to set the timing, easier to use a dial indicator to find true TDC.

    330whp is usual for a 400bhp stock M5...

I use both usually just to be sure, but I didn't help him build the engine so I had no input on its rebuilding.

Hmmm. Guess we're just low on power then lol. Cars seem to run well though.

    98' e36 m3 US-Spec
how much power do you get from a shark injector tune, 24lb injectors, headers and Porsche HFM? and how much more power with a m50 manifold

    between 230-240whp with M50, 215-230 without.

look through this thread, there are numerous dynos to that effect.

Yea I know. Its 24 pages of dynos. It would be too much to scroll through. But thanks
I thought with headers, shark injector, 24 lb injectors, HFM and m50 you would get 250hp.
Would 30whp be a noticeable difference?

you will fell the diff, cause you will loose low end torque and gain topend HP...your torque curve will change to top...

I dynoed with all that except headers and made 230.7whp/224wtq. I added headers and it made a very noticeable difference though so I have to redyno the car

I agree. Those are REALLY weak numbers for those mods. One of the most important things about getting a dyno is getting those AFR #s. Something must be really off with that rebuilt engine...

With similar bolt ons I made 250.9 rwhp/ 237.7 rwtq on a Dynojet dyno...

    1998 BMW M3 Coupe

Surprising Dyno Results...basically stock, I think

    Okay, so here's the deal.
Purchased this 1998 M3 coupe in January, with 130,000 miles. Now has 140,000. Only work done thus far is total suspension & brake overhaul (+ guibo & center support bearing).
Relevant non-stock engine \ driveline upgrades:
Cold Air Intake, UUC lightweight flywheel + short shifter + M5 Stage II clutch (per previous owner, who I believe is credible), UUC exhaust (muffler).
NO aftermarket headers, no track pipe, OE headers & cat pipes.

Recent compression testing showed all cylinders 207-211 psi, adjusted for 1000 ft altitude (actuals 202-206).
Recent leakdown testing showed low of 1.2% \ max of 3.3% at 90psi.

So, look at these numbers, dyno'd yesterday in Charlotte area. Temp was about 65 degrees, low humidity - maybe 15%, so ideal conditions...but still, these numbers appear to be as good as any I have seen on this post for cars with lots of bolt-on mods...why should I not be (pleasantly) surprised by my results? These seem high for a stock motor this old...yes?

FYI, we did 3 runs, 4th gear; below results in order, 1st to 3rd runs (want to, but cannot post the dyno printout file - in JPEG format and too large according to Forum, at 438kb):

    MAX HP - 214.08, 217.09, 219.39 @ 6100 rpm
    MAX TQ - 217.92, 220.08, 221.71 @ 4000 rpm

Try this link if you are interested...I think it will take you to the dyno printout sent to me by my shop:

This dyno seemed to be a bit of a heartbreaker. An '08 M3 ran 280whp. An '04 ZHP ran 176.

A Dinan supercharged (and throttle body, headers, exhaust, etc.) M3 ran right after mine. Here is his dyno graph.

That dyno sucks IMO, an i know a dyno is a tuning tool and every dyno is different, talk about heart breaker... try dynoing somewhere else if you can with a different dyno.

It's mainly the injectors that require the tune.
