Shortly after I installed the understeer budget shortshifter (including Z roadster shifter, and modified selector rod), I've experienced clunk/click noise (depending on how hard I shift) almost every time I shift from 1-2 and 2-3. Rest of the gears are normal. Let me emphasize that the noise is not drivetrain noise (e.g. subframe, driveshaft, etc), it occurs exactly when I shift when the car is in motion. When the car is stationary, there is no such noise.
I was also getting drivetrain noise but after I installed new RSMs, they are gone, but the clunk/click noise from the tranny remains. Morever, I suspect my clutch bearing is failing as well since there is a clunking noise when the car is stopped with clutch out. When clutch is in, there is no clunking noise.
What could be the problem? I suspect shifter bushings, or maybe the SSK itself? Please advise.
Thanks.
I like to add that I'm using redline D4 ATF in tranny, and guibo, front differential bolt, and varies bushings all look good when I went under the car last month. The noise occured before that.
bump for replies.
help.

Yep

If the noise started when you installed the SSK - then the SSK is where you look.Originally Posted by wimpwgn
Are you certain it's installed correctly?
Did you replace the cup assembly the shifter moves in (these DO wear - if you can move the shifter by pulling up on it - it's worn..)
Did the kit replace rubber bushings with something other than rubber? If so they'll transmit more noise.
Need more details to even begin to guess at an answer.
And I'm heading off on vacation soon.. (whatever that is..)

The cup was replaced, so was the washers and circlips, but none of the other bushings were replaced. The car has 65k miles if that means anything.
I found out if I shift at above 3k rpm, the clunk disappears.
You only did 1/2 the job if you didn't replace the other bushings.. one's I'd suggest you do:Originally Posted by wimpwgn

#2 - use the UUC delrin replacement bushings
#4 - use the factory rubber bushing
If you really want it to be nice - replace 12, 13, 14 and 15. The pin (#15) tends to wear as does the connector it goes through.
These will give you a nice tight feel to even a stock shifter..
