you can get the one of the best short throw shifters from the same place you can get the new bearing, the stealership. People will go with a z3 or m roadster shifter assembly and have a shorter throw for under 100$ i think

Has anyone tried out Understeer.com's short shift kit? It's the cheapest I can find at only $75.

Call up BMA and order a SSk from them. You can choose whatever lever you want (Z3 1.9, Z3 3.0, Z4 2.5, Z4 3.0, m roadster...)
The lever with all of the replacement bushings will be about $60 from BMA. Call or email Patrick. He will hook you up.
Yesterday i called BMAparts and talked with Patrick, and Z4 3.0 SSK is on way to me
Thanks guys on help

ok in the link to revlimited there is this link in there http://www.unofficialbmw.com/e36/dri...ift_lever.html
In this link it lists a couple different z3M levers how do people shorten the lever? do they actually cut it and then weld it back togethor?

could I modefy my stock shifter to become a short shifter. Because the principuls for a shortshifter are pretty simple? arn't they?

They work by extending the portion of shift lever below the pivot point. So, yes, you could do it. It would just require some chopping and welding. But for $60 with new bushings, why bother?Originally Posted by Chenz

It would be pretty difficult to modify your stock lever. You would achieve the "short throw" effect by lengthening the lever below the pivot ball. With the stock lever, the bottom of the lever that attaches to the selector rod is right below the pivot ball. Basicly, there is no gap between the two, so it would be very difficult to chop and weld it to be longer.Originally Posted by Chenz
It would work it you were modifying a short throw shifter though, because there is accually some material to work with there...
I was thinking of modifying my Z3 3.0 lever. I was going to shorten the length below the pivot ball because the throw is too short right now and I am too cheap to buy a Z3 1.9 lever...

so lets say i want a Z4 2.5 short shifter? what do i all need parts wise? do i have to drop the tranny? any help would be greatly appreciate it.
Just call patrick at bmaparts.com and tell him you want a z4 2.5 short shit: he'll put everything you need there for you. And it will come out to 60 something shipped.Originally Posted by oo=[][]=oo
No, you need to drop your tranny.
The "short throw" is obtained by the longer rod below the pivot point like erik stated. The M roadster lever I have sits only slightly lower than a stock e30 shifter, but the throw is the shortest of all the levers. If you modify the stock shift lever it will only sit lower, your shift throws will be unaltered (i did it once).
In addition to everything partick offers you, make sure to get the selector rod knuckle. Its a stubby T shapped part that pops in the back of the transmission and the shift rod attaches to it. If you want tight shifts that will not wear out substitute the yellow "bushings" for solid washers.

does this stree the tranny like the syncros at all or anyhint else? i dont want to hurt my tranny, i dont shift hard, but just ciruos if a SSK deos any extra wear?
spell check is your friend...Originally Posted by oo=[][]=oo
anyway, this should not hurt your tranny at all. If you think about it, it is all just a matter of leverage. There is nothing to hurt if you drive nicely. If you are jamming it into each gear and totally thrashing the hell out of it, stuff will die. it is not because of the shift lever though...

I just got Z4 3.0i SSK from BMA ($66 + $6 shipping) can't wait to install

thanks for the info guys...
i just put int he z4 3L ssk, got it from BMA for 50$. we got a discount cause we orderd like 1600$ worth of parts but it came with the shifter rod bushing, the plastic cup for the ball, and 4 o rings, and after installing those it feels super tight. before i had a significan't amount of play in my shifter.
Ok, so the trans DOES have to come out? And do you have to bend the selector rod with all of the Z-car shifters or just the longer ones (Z4-3.0, Z3-M, etc...)?

No, the trans does NOT have to come out.Originally Posted by turningermanese
Not all of the shifters require bending the selector rod. If you have a harmonic balancer then the z4 3.0 will require bending of the rod to clear it. There might be others.
