***E39 M5 Mirror Install (((All You Need To Know))) **

Here's all you need to know about installing M5 mirrors (w/ the autofold feature) on your E39.

First you need the M5 mirrors that are equiped with the autofold feature. I bought mine from bavarian-motorwerks on ebay. There are many other companies that sell similiar mirrors or you can purchase the OEM mirrors from a BMW dealership, but you will pay around $1,400.00.

Link below, I paid $235.00 plus $40.00 shipping.

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...category=33649

I had them professionaly painted for $100.00.

Now you need the driver side and passenge side module if you want the mirrors to fold up. Part number are as follows from your BMW dealership:

    61-31-6-909-903 (M5 driver's window switch unit)
    61-35-6-904-243 (M5 passenger's door controller)
You can look these parts up on www.realoem.com for pricing etc...

The link below will show you instrcutions and photos on how to install the mirrors etc...

    http://www.bmwtips.com/tipsntricks/t...portmirror.htm

Hope this helps all you E39'ers that want to upgrade to the M5 mirror with the autofold feature.

The very last photo is of the new M license plate holder and I messed around with the numbers, so thats not really what my plate says.

Thanks, it was more work and money than I had originally thought it was going to be, but I'm happy I did it, now that it is finished.

That looks BADASS! So you have a little switch in the cabin that folds them up like that? Great price too.

So you said the autofold isn't absolutely necessary, but if we want to - we can always purchase the electric fold parts, correct?

Yes, assuming you have the electric autofold version of the replica mirror. There are the manual fold ones like the ones I have. Not being sarcastic, just don't like to assume things too much.

Yes, but you have to purchase mirrors that have the autofold feature.

No. There are two types of mirrors you can purchase. The manual fold up mirrors, or the autofold up mirrors that you have to get a switch from BMW to make them fold up.

Thanks for the info. I have been meaning to do this for quite some time now.

Let me ask a dumb question though, what is the purpose behind the flipping up of the mirrors? Something I have always wondered.

for when in tight parking spaces so you don't want the moron who pulls in next to you to hit them...or if you are parked on the side of the road and you don't want the moron driving by you to hit them...These mirrors are small though, and folding them up doesn't seem to make that big of a difference...thigns would be different if they were SUV mirrors or something...(I could've used them several times in our old suburban)...I saw a guy in an escalade use it the other day...comes in handy if you have large mirros...if not then like in this case, seems kinda pointless...It's a neat function, but it doesn't seem to make the car that much narrower...

Ah, ok I see. I guess I never make it a point of parking that close to anyone anyway. I'm a larger guy and can't squeeze out of the car anway, not too mention I would rather not have any door dings.

But, they apparently look real cool in photos, cause I see a lot of folded mirrors up in shots.

    Thanks.

Folding mirrors are a must, especially around minvans and SUV soccer moms who can't park very well.

Do you need both switches or can you powerfold with just the drivers side switch?

Zack, that 530 is badass. Have a 99 540i6 of similar color that would luv to trick out like you've done with yours. Any other pics you can share?

You will be able to powerfold from just the drivers side, but you will need to buy the switches/wiring connections for both sides in order for it to work.

    Looking good bro...

btw, if you get the autofold ones and do not get the switches, I would advise against attempting to manually fold them... It may work or may not work... When I got these on my prev. E39, I heard you can manually fold the autofold ones... BAD MOVE! The passenger side folded nicely... when I folded the driver side, I heard a click and then the sucker was loose, had a little wobble to it...

so if you guys want to have it fold up but do not want to spend the extra cash for the modules, get the manual ones... You will be glad you did..

How much did the "switches" cost, and where did you decide to buy them from?

    Thanks.
