Had my water pump (plastic impeller), and thermostat replaced a couple of weeks ago.
I asked to have the original parts kept for me so I could see if the pump had any signs of deterioration.
To my surprise, the plastic impeller was in perfect shape at 48K miles.
Still better to have it switched out, but mine was still looking good!
Just a little FYI,

Yep, same here.
I swapped out the original plastic impeller'd pump about a month ago, and guess what, no cracks, and 71,000 miles.
However the metal pump offers something the plastic one never could -- peace of mind :
Agreed...
Insurance is still the name of the game here......

Yeah, my water impeller was in good condition also, however, my mechanic showed me how weak the thing was by snapping it pieces. ha.
