The joys of owning an M3

So I've had my M3 for a mere 3 weeks or so now. The other night, I'm driving home (a 3 minute drive from down the street), and come to a flashing red. I slow down, basically to a complete stop, maybe BARELY rolling through. Next thing I know, I'm pulled over getting a flashing red light violation. The cop was such a nice guy too...telling me I would have gotten a warning if I had "kept my mouth shut". Apparently I was wrong in telling him that I did come to a full stop Oh yeah, and he was nice enough to tag on a seat belt violation while he was at it. What a guy!

Anyway, I'm 99.9% sure this wouldn't have happened in my old Altima...but screw em...I love my new car!

I've had the M3 for just about two years. I've avoided two speeding tickets by pulling over BEFORE the cops flashed lights, turning off my engine, and greeting the cops with my license in hand. It would have happened a third time, but the cop didn't even bother pulling over. He just tailed me, flipped a U, pulled up beside me, and wagged his finger in the "you've been naughty" motion.

What's the worse that can possibly happen besides the cop asking you why you've pulled over?

That said, right when I got the M3, I did get a speeding ticket -- because when I was doing 85 in a 60 I was stupid enough to say, "Uh, I thought I was doing 70, officer."

Cops just don't want to be treated like their blithering idiots. They know when they've busted someone and when citizens even begin to pitch an alternate reality, they get offended.

Who knows, maybe your cop had a special bug up his ass. But most cops actually get a kick with drivers who know the game and are willing to play ball.

i've owned three "high performance" cars, including the M3, and several "low performance" cars. my tickets were in: '81 isuzu p/u, '97 yukon, '93 explorer, '80 320i, and 5.0L mustang (the only "high performance" ticket i've gotten). maybe i've been lucky...

I got pulled over the first week of ownership and not since, didn't get a ticket

Copy complimented me on the "fast ass" car that I had. And the birthday cake that was dripping in the back seat due to the heat (on the way to my kiddo's 2yr b-day party)

Do not own an M3...but I have only been pulled over once since I've had this car and I was doing 80 in a 55 zone on the business loop. He told me he pulled me over for doing 80 and having tinted windows on the front. I just nodded and said yah I know...just late for school. He let me go with just a fix-it ticket. Must say that was the only nice CHP I have met.

I was pulled over once in my M3, for no front tag....he asked me why i thought i didn't need a front tag, i said...honestly sir, i don't like it and decided to keep it off.....he asked where it was, and i told him that it was at home.

He gave me a 50$ ticket anyway, but thought it was cool i didn't lie about it...heh....i basically said i didn't feel like lieing about it and being an ass to him, i thought i'd be respectful and tell the truth...
nice cop, but.....still got tha damn ticket.....haha, still haven't paid it and i got it back in the winter....oops

Raced a cop and got a warning.

I was on my way home on a Friday night around 11 PM after an indoor soccer game. The trip home included a 3 lane 50 mph main drag that intersects a popular cruising street- lots of guys wanting to race. I found myself at a large intersection sitting in lane 3 next to a large van conversion in lane two and ??? in lane 1. The road merges down to two lanes on the other side of the intersection, so as I pulled away from the light I sped up to merge in front of the van. My windows were down and the sunroof was open and I could hear the sound of the car in lane 1 (???) flooring it. I didn't really look over at him, but I could see that it was some kind of non-descript Oldsmobuick out of the corner of my eye. I punched it and had left him about 1/4 behind me after hitting at least 100 mph when I was greeted by the sight of wig-wags in my rear-view mirror. (Those left-right-left-right headlight flashing things.)

My first thought was "Where the heck did HE come from?"

I figured I had passed a radar patrol car on a side street.

I immediately pulled into the next parking lot and played model traffic stop citizen.

It was not until half way through the whole thing that I realized that this guy was the guy in lane 1. I was totally confused.

I babbled something like, "Gosh I am sorry...I guess I got carried away trying to merge..."

Luckily, he was an undercover sherriff and didn't have time to mess with a ticket. He was very serious and stearn throughout the whole thing, but I suspect he laughed about it later.

My wife still doesn't laugh about the story to this day.

Sneeky bastards sometimes though. Hit the passing lane, going down hill, on the mountain highway (hwy 50) just before the turn off to Sierra Ski Resort. Of course I was doing better than the speed limit (I was actually doing 75 in a 55) to pass and at the end of the passing lane is a curve with a CHP just waiting on the other side with instant-on. I tried to argue that it is pretty hard to pass in a passing lane without exceeding the speed limit but it didn't work. The city manager in the passenger seat, and the redevelopment agency manager in the back seat, just laughed.

P.S. I don't even back out of the garage without my seat belt on.

    KEEP RIGHT EXCEPT TO PASS!

The M3 is gone. I'll miss it but I love this E39 540i-6 spd. I call my rebuilt iX 5 spd. conversion 'my little red head' because she's so much fun to play with.

I had a cop tailgate me for a bit last night around 1am.. I thought for sure he was gonna pull me over.. I figured he was calling for some backup or something...

(I have no plates on my car.. my temp tag is on my backseats floor)

after like 5 minutes of me having cruise control on 35mph he hopped over a lane (I thought he was gonna get next to me and tell me to pull over) and then hopped over 3 more lanes and pulled over.. just stopped on the side of the road

Yesterday I was driving back from Lake George (To DC... hell of a drive) and I decided to duck through some back roads (209,206) in NY and Jersey because the NYS thruway was backed up 130 miles away from the city.

During my little romp through the country side, I came upon a pack of slow ass cars that held me back for about 10 miles. Finally the road split into 3 lines (2 my way) so I could pass, and I seized the opportunity, weaving through the pack as I ran all my gears to readline, finally coming out at the head doing 100+ mph. It just so happened that one of the cars in the pack, the second to the leader actually, was a black Audi A4, who, upon seeing me blow by like a bat out of hell, decided to pass the one car in front of him and pull in behind me. (completely safe and legal pass)

Well, 2 or so miles down the road, I see lights pulling up behind us fast...

    "oh crap"...

The audi and I both pull over to "let him by" (even though I knew he was after me)... but instead, he pulls in behind the Audi leaving me free to drive on...

I know that someone called in a "black sedan passing recklessly"... I'm just lucky that the cop decided to stop the first black sedan that he came upon... (and/or didn't get too good of a look at me)...

nevertheless... quite a nerveracking occurance, definately the closest I've come to a ticket in a long time... and I feel bad for that poor Audi driver.

Since I've had my M3 (2 years and 50,000 miles), I've been pulled over 7 times. yet from those 7 times, I have only received 2 speeding tickets. Cops seem to be quite friendly to me, especially when I'm nice to them. There have been a couple times on the freeway when I was trailing another car at about 90-95 and a cop has passed me and pulled over the other car. I've really been quite lucky.

The last ticket I got, the cop tried to get me for racing at 2:00am on Highway 99 in outside of Modesto, CA. An 80's camero and I were going about 90-95 and suddenly I saw some suspicious headlights behind closing in fast. I slowed and the CHP went by me. Phew I thought...or not. He got behind the Camero and put on his blue n' reds. Then he pulled right into the middle of the 2 lanes of the highway and cop #2 got out of the passenger side with a flashlight and began waving me to the side of the road. They said I was racing, I said I wasn't. They asked if I knew the people in the Camero, I said no. They told me that if you are breaking the speed limit in pairs and you know each other, its considered "racing". They looked at my exhaust, my guages, my seats, my seatbelts (the latter two are stock) and said he'd knock the speed down to 80 if I didn't take him to court. I said okay and they left. Then, a mile down the road, they're waiting to see if the camero and I take the same exit. I guess if you take the same exit after breaking the speed limit in pairs, you were "racing". Anyway, I just found it interesting because it was the first time I'd been pulled over in tandem. blah, blah, blah

4 months owning the car when I was pulled over for making a turn on a red light. The cop was riding a BMW motorcycle and I was completely honest with him. Not sure if it was the honesty or the fact that we were both in/on BMW but all I got was a warning. However, it is tough to keep these cars under the speed limit so I expect a ticket at some point.
