Need help for Hill Recognition on 2002 M3 SMG

Can anybody tell me what is the definition of Hill Recognition system on 2002 M3 SMG????

My guess would be that it knows when you're at a stop going up a hill. Since it's a manu-matic with computer-controlled clutch, it has to recognize the hill, hence Hill Recognition.

Just a guess.
