Nope, paint stays on.
Nope, paint stays on, but real dirty and looks ugly afterwards.
I was thinking of buying one of those "caliper paint" kits from the Tire Rack (or other source), but I was wondering how well these paints hold up if the car spends a day or two at the track? Will the paint burn off? I've seen some paint burn off at the track before, but that was before any of these "caliper paints" ever came out.
Anyone out there have actual live experience? Do you have to "clean" the calipers after spending a day or two at the track?
Thanks!
Is this the first poll ever to be posted in the Track forum?

Save yourself some money and buy VHT Brake Paint. Ceramic engine block paint is what I have been using but I will probably switch to this stuff.
$8 a can, and designed for brake components.

Been using high temp spray paint for years, been tracking for years. It will chip off after a while but it's an easy touch up.
Edit: Where's my prize?
I've always thought an extra layer of paint would hold in more heat.

Most of those paints aren't really thick enough to make that much of a difference.Originally Posted by loudes 13
As far as paint goes, I've used high temp engine paint for calipers in the past. While I don't track my M3, I do track my RX-7:

I find that brake dust tears up the paint more than just from the heat.
do you have the R1 touring package? b/c your FD is hawt

Plastikote makes Caliper spray paint and it works great, use tons of brake cleaner, then acetone before painting. Then many many coats. I did my last ones last summer, they were still shining up real nice (bright red) until the day got rid of the car! Colors are Blue, Red, Black, Silver, Yellow....
I used a soft old toothbrush to get off any brakedust on wash days.
i got some 1200 degree black engine enamel (spray paint) from kragen for about 5 bucks a can i bought 2 only used about 1 and a half, this was on my WRX, and i intend to do so on the M3 as soon as i have time...
i used brake clean and cleaned the shit out of them after i took them off of the car, i was doing ss lines at the time so i figured i may as well take the whole caliper off to get all the small places. i did about 5 coats with about 10 min of drying time in between.

Shouldn't this topic be in the appearance section?

It's a Touring. It's currently going through a rebuild as I blew the motor at the track. If you are interested, you can check the project and some pics here:Originally Posted by orijinal poser

Thanks for the compliment on the car. After it's rebuilt, it will most likely go up for sale. I've had it for a long time and I'm just tired of working on it. I'm thinking of getting a mid '90's NSX for the track. It won't be as fast, but I'm not all that concerned with that.
Considering the amount of heat that the brakes are going to generate on the track; I would doubt they would hold more than a few 10's extra degrees (if that) verses several hundred. If a few degrees is going to be the difference between getting brake fade or not, you have bigger problems than just paint.Originally Posted by loudes 13
