I found a recommendation on the Audi Boards actually and found some at Tunerdomes. Cant seem to post the link, but look up the 'shop by part#' and part #6418 replacements. They have a 2 Watt bulb. They get a little warm to the touch but are bright as hell. LED technology has come a long way and unless you see little yellow surface mount LEDs on the bulb you've bought, you probably arent working with a very bright bulb at all in comparison to these. Email me if you have questions on how I installed mine in my car. They ended up looking awesome at night...not sure if they are really DOT approved or not though. LOL

I know this is a pretty old thread but I was wondering if anyone has tried using SMD leds?

I would like to see how they compare to the bulbs with 9 LED's

Try one a let us know. As long as the voltage and amp draw are similar, they should work fine. Probably outlast the 9 Bulb ones. (I've had a couple go bad over the years, but love the light)

    I have no idea.

I'm thinking about ordering one of those and one of the 9 led ones to compare. And then order a full set of those that look better.

6 super bright high power surface mount white LED
    Voltage = 12V DC
    Light Output = 80 Lumen (65 ma)
    Color Temperature = 6000K
    Length: 39mm
    Width: 16mm
    Depth: 9mm

6000K is the same as my headlights, so it should look pretty good

It most likely would use the 39mm led's, you can search ebay for them.

I would also suggest you read this entire thread.

I bought the ones off of bav auto and they are expensive, but I picked up a 24-led panel for the front dome and 12-led panels for the back.

I get complimented on them all the time. They are white-ish blue and super bright. Much newer and brighter looking than the stock dull yellow-white bulbs.

I'll add my PM reply here in case anyone else needs help...

Just go to Ebay and search "39mm 9 LED Festoon"....a good 7 come up. I used White bulbs and they look awesome. You need 3, one for each of the the rear side and center front lights. I never found out what goes into the Map lights and almost never use them. But the others come one every time you open a door. Well worth it and they use a lot less power....

    Dim

    Just a quick quesiton:
I'm new to the whole interior modding. Is it all light bulbs that dim, or does it depend on the lightbulbs you buy. Like my bulbs dim when I lock the car. Do all bulbs I buy do this or no?

LED-based lamps will dim to 10% (somewhat more than 3 f-stops) and then snap off. A fellow and I will try to address this on his car.

Since this is up again, I replaced mine 2 months ago with the newer SMD versions, old styles just were not lasting long enough, maybe a year or so. I'll give feedback if I run into an issue with the SMD ones....

Hey guys. 1st of all sorry for bumping a semi old thread.

2nd: after I installed the LED's, a couple hours later my comfort relay went bad and the small "reading lights" (?) next to the center dome, as well as the sun visor lights stopped working (along with my power windows). Could the LED's have caused this? Or was it just a huge coincidence?

Also, I noticed that the LED's never fully turned off, they are sort of dimmed when I leave the dome switch in the center, they only turn fully off when I turn the dome switch off.

I may have gotten bulbs a size wrong, but I stretched the metal connectors to make the bulbs fit. They all got the same voltage so there shouldn't be a problem with this, right?

    Thanks.

bumping old / dead threads like a boss drunk posting.. Soo What am I suppose to do with the rear lights? I've got a 98 M3 coupe, and I know it splits in the middle so it can work as a reading light, is there anywhere to replace it or put bulbs in that'll work?
