I got sharked a few months back. A few weeks ago my car was at the dealer and they decided to upgrade my DME with a new program because they felt like the idle was funny. Either way, I tried to reshark today and it threw code 162 - vehicle mismatch. The shark was used on this vehicle. What can I do or did I just lose $350?

Sachin...did they tell you before they upgrade the DME? I 've read about this somewhere before so I m hesitant about the dealer upgrading software in my car. I thought you gonna get blown anyway

Ok.. Eurosport was initially unwilling to help me out but just called me back. Josh said that if it is a vehicle mismatch, it'll show in the shark and it may be off by a digit or so because the dealer may have punched something in the wrong VIN w/ a typo on the update. Anyway, for those who read the previous post, ignore it.. Josh is helping me out now and hopefully we'll get to the bottom of this... should've waited a few minutes before letting my temper get the best of me..

That's just not right. Did you speak with Josh? I'd offer a written letter from your dealer stating that the DME was updated. Perhaps that would satisfy them.
Further, did you buy the injector from them, from Turner? Surely they can track your purchase and know that you were a customer.
In the slow lane
Alright, it's been a little while since I touched this thread, but it's back. I provided Josh with proof that the dealer had upgraded my DME and sent the injector back. I bought the piece from Woofer (while he was in Austin) but wasn't able to show proof of purchase so they aren't willing to help me out - short of sending them the ECU from my car so they can syncronize them on their computer. Obviously since it's my daily that isn't really an option so it looks like I'm out over $300.. Thanks for the shitty service..

Staying completely away from the right or wrong of this situation I would say that if you have any possibility of borrowing a car for a day or two, you could Fedex the ECU and injecorr back and forth in a couple of days. Even a cheap rental car is cheaper than losing the money.
But here is another suggestion. Talk to Josh again and see how the mismatch could have been caused by the dealer. If they typed in a S/N wrong or something, the dealer should be able and probably willing to reflash it again with the correct numbers typed in. Then the injector you have will work correctly.
Don't walk away from a $300 investment without trying a couple of more things.
According to the guys at Eurosport, there was no VIN mismatch - ie: when the dealer upgraded the DME, there were no typos. However, despite that, the shark still threw code 162 indicating a mismatch. They were unable to explain this. Additionally, I'm 250 miles from my dealer, and work 60-80 hour weeks and am less than 25 so renting a car is next to impossible.. Driving 50 miles a day to different work places doesn't help either. Overall, it's just a frustrating situation and I've done my best to prove that I'm not trying to rip anyone off. I do appreciate the input though, given different circumstances (and some knowledge of even how to pull the ECU out), maybe it would be more doable but at this point, I can't invest anymore time or money into it. It would just be nice to have my car sharked again..

Is thre a chance that you will in the future be away on vacation? I waited quite a while years ago to have my car done when I would be gone. Eurosport or Turner has a nice little writeup they can fax you on how to remove the ECU.
Other than that, I wish I could help you out some more.
bummer... you should report this to Conforti directly via email as a bug in his VIN ID code, and complain about the service you got.

Thanks for the input guys.. I'll contact Turner and see what removing the ECU entails, but I dunno.. May have to wait until thanksgiving..

Hellrot, I dont know if this suggestion was made, but dont you have the option of telling the dealer to reflash you back to what you were before the latest upgrade? You can say that you had stipulated some time ago that you would be notified before any software change was made because of your 3rd party issue, and compatibility....Anyway, maybe its worth a shot..Thanks for the input guys.. Heres another thing...Whenever Dinan's software goes in teh car, you get these big stickers for the engine bay, that notifies the srvce staff not to do anything SW related without either talking to you or dinan. That would have protected you too.

Question.
Did you revert back to the stock program before taking it to the dealer?
I want to get my DEM updated because of the rough idle problem...
No, I didn't. They upgraded the DME b/c when they entered my VIn into their computer, it showed that I needed an upgrade.. If you do get the dealer to upgrade the DME, the shark may or may not work again. I don't know if it remembers the computer settings when you clear the DME in which case it will ID it as a different car later. Call Josh and hopefully he'll be able to help you..
Sorry,

So what are you supposed to do?
Before taking the car to the dealer with shark software, are you supposed to unflash it?

here's what I think is happening (mind you, I could very well be wrong). The SI knows that it last injected the Conforti program into your DME. Since the dealer reflashed the DME, it now has a stock program in it. When you reconnect the SI to the car, instead of seeing the Shark program, it's seeing the stock program. This is causing the 'VIN mismatch' error.
Are you sure that the guys at Eurosport are clear and understand the chain of events?

I think you're right.. I don't know if unsharking would've made a difference or not, but Eurosport could probably tell you for sure. The dealer upgrade my DME w/o my knowledge, but all I know is that I never tried to rip anyone off and I got screwed. I bought the injector for my car alone and now it won't work. As far as is Eurosport clear on the matter, I've explained it both on the phone and in writing, as well as I've supplied a dated work order statement from my dealer receipt stating that DME was upgraded... it didn't seem to matter though..Originally posted by NickG

That's odd. The only software revision I needed for my 99 M3 was the side airbag recall. I had this done before I had my Shark Injector, though. However, Bob got his done after his Shark Injector, and the dealership told him the software update didn't touch anything for the engine. I was assuming that the 99 M3s didn't need any sort of update for the rough idle problem because it was already in there.

I did a DME removal a few months back to send the unit back to Josh for a reprogram (de-sharked). I don't have the shark injector because I purchased the software upgrade before there was such a thing, so I have to send the DME in each time I need to re-program/de-program. My car seemed to be pinging slightly sometimes at WOT, so I figured it might be the software (it wasn't). Anyway, removal and re-installation was pretty basic, and took about 1.5 hours total. The only bummer is that I have to pay shipping each way, which I think sucks. If I have proof that software upgrade was purchased, why can't they program an injector to work only on my DME, which would prevent me from selling it or using on another vehicle?
HRS,
I don't know if this will help or not but no one has mentioned this possibility in the thread yet so here goes.......have you tried the "RESTORE" function on the Shark Injector? Seems to me that if you did this now it would over-write the upgrade your dealer just did and restore your DME programming to the same level you had just before you Sharked your car for the first time. If that's true, you could then Shark it all over again just after using restore.....fixed!
This sounds too simple to actually work! LOL :
FWIW, I've had several instances where I've requested that the dealer update my code and I've always used the "Restore" function before taking the car in. The instructions are really vague (or non-existant) on how to do this but works with the same light sequence as when "Install" is used.
I have no idea if this will help your situation.....hell, it might make it worse, but I hope not, just trying to be constructive and help out.
Mike
Mike - I'm surprised that this hasn't come up yet and you're right, it seems to simple to work. I did try it and to no avail, it still spit out error codes. I think it will only restore the original settings if it recognizes that the computer has shark settings (and VIN ID of course). It's all such a mess.. Thanks Mike. and for those of you using the Shark, I hope you have better luck than I did..
What's really upsetting to me is I think I may buy a new one. I really liked the gains and more than anything, the engine ran smoother and I gained some fuel economy. Does anyone carry it for less than $349? Thanks,

For regular service where they aren't touching the computer (although mine was updated do to a VIN pullup) you can leave it as is - the dealer won't know the difference. If they are changing the computer settings, I'd restore and verify w/ Eurosport beforehand that you'll be able to reshark, or just not have computer upgrade done at all..
