    E36 Weights

I'm curious about the weights of various E36's.

As a reference, my '92 325is weighed in at 3050 lbs. (5 speed, stock leather interior, nearly full tank). Here's the pertinent information:

    Weight reducers:
    Spare/jack removed
    No armrest
    Lightly optioned overall
    Custom cat-back

    Weight adders:
    17x8.5 (x4) M3 Doublespoke II's with 255/40's
    Dalan hitch
    Sunroof
    Floormats
    Stock size/weight battery

Other than these things, it's basically stock with A/C, etc. So obviously in race trim (lighter wheels and less fuel) it's well under 3000 lbs. Moreso when I replace the seats and now that I've put in coilovers (smaller springs front and rear), the weight should be that much lighter. If I can get the STX-prepped race weight down to 2900 lbs., I think I'll be quite content.

So how does your car compare? Lighter? Heavier?

A truck and a Camaro (redneck extraordinare)
    93 325is

    Reducers:
    UUC Exhaust
    Sparco Evo 2s

    Adders:
    17x8s with Ecsta MXs (negligible)
    Sunroof
    Stock battery
    Spare/jack still in
    ~1/2 tank

    3010 lbs.

With the lighter exhaust I have (DMG special - ~20 lbs), spare/jack out, less fuel, and Braille battery I expect to be right around 2900 or a tad less in STX trim.

Thanks, Greg. That reminds me that I forgot to list my cat-back as a weight reducer. I've updated my post above...

Any idea how much weight the seats saved you?

Numbers from the Atlanta Tour and Pro Solo.

    Car: 1997 M3

At the Tour the car weighed 3140 with about 1/4 tank of gas and with the trunk emptied (spare, jack, carpet, etc...) and the CCWs on. I have no other significant weight lightening mods.

At the Pro I removed the backseat out of curiosity and the car weighed 3060 with about the same amount of gas and the same stuff removed.

edit - Oh yeah, I have the UUC Catback which is lighter than stock and the GC Suspension is a bit lighter than stock as well. But evertyhing else is stock, even the battery.

I have a '98 M3/4. Any idea if the sedan weighs more or less than the coupe? I'll go weigh it and get back to you guys.

I've stripped everything from the front seats back including the rear deck and all sound material. Only addition is an Autopower Roll Bar.

Thanks, guys. I should point out I'm looking for "street" car weights. Meaning Stock, Street Touring, Street Prepared, & Street Mod type levels of preparation. Not fully gutted, caged, race cars. But, thanks for the info just the same.

    Keep 'em comin'!

1993 325is. Weighed with just over 1/4 tanks of gas. Mainly used in STX.

    Items that would/may decrease weight:
    -17x8 BBS RK's
-Custom single pipe exhaust from downpipes back
    -Ground Control Suspension components
-No spare, tools, or stuff in trunk

    Total came out to 2935lbs.

    Kosei's/Hoosier (dropped ~30lbs from 8.5" 10 spokes and Victos)
    Optima Battery

2832 with 1/4 tank at the Atlanta Pro.

I'm pissed because my car weighed 2836 in Topeka last year, and I have a CF hood and no A/C now. I want it under 2800. I'm going to get a ltw battery, pull the stereo crap, and maybe go Gary Richardson on my sunroof. Those combined should get me under 2800.

Don't think that we can remove the pasenger side air bag in the dash?? But if you know something different let me know.

My car weighs in at about 2625 race trim. You name it I did it.
non sunroof car to start with. Soon to have a really loud/light titanuim exhaust, keep that on the down low guys. I don't need my competitors to know what I am up to.

Mmmmm, yeah.....I was at 2699 on the scales at Nats last year. carbon fibre hood, fiberglass shells, 17x9 IFGs with 275/40 710s, sunroof delete, no ac, no stereo wiring, light-ish exhaust (still steel though), etc.

This year....aluminum doors, but bigger wheels and tires, and a V8 (which is lighter) but more exhaust, which is heavier.....I dunno, I expect mid to upper 2600s

Threw that out there. Gotta see if the 94 Mtech has a passenger side airbag. If it doesn't, then it's a matter of UD/BD the dash. If it does, then it will stay (drat).

I'm surprised you would go with a louder exhaust. Don't you have sound restrictions where you run?

See you Friday. I'll be the one in the underprepared / underpowered Street Mod... I mean fully prepared DSP car

    Who's car you callin' underprepared/underpowered!??Hrumph!

I think that they decided to put the Mtech on a different line than the M3s in BSP. Not 100% sure though.

97 M3 Ex-Luxo, 2712 with 1/4" tank. Still need to do Al doors and still have cats, otherwise if it can be done it has for the most part. Still don't have an example of what the interior is like in the LTW to see what can be done about sound-deadening/carpeting in the front. Haven't gone crazy and put a go-kart seat in for the passenger side. (Which IMO is not in the spirit of an "adult sized seat" though meets the letter of the law.)

John - My sunroof only weighed 35 lbs, FWIW. 5 lbs insert so a net gain of 30 lbs.

    BSP trim
2934 lbs. (measured with 1/8th tank of gas)

Things I've done to get it there:

    Sparco Evo2s
    17x9 SSR Comps
    245/40 A3S03s
    fan delete
    Hawker Odyssey battery
    Bimmer Haus exhaust
    crank pulley
    Sparco steering wheel
    fog light delete panels
empty trunk (removed mat, battery cover, tools, spare, jack)

I can lose a tiny bit more by removing the CD changer, floor mats, sunroof, & AC, but that's too much, methinks. Changer & floor mats, yes. Remove AC & sunroof? No.

It still has the rear seats in it I'll need to pull them between rounds if I can get my fat arse back there!

I'm not 100% either. Can't find a definite Y/N on this in the on-line rules. Might take an e-mail to Topeka to verify

Yeah... determining the total savings will be tough as I plan on doing the BMW replacement roof skin vs. just plugging the hole with a CF piece. That means new skin, new paint, different headliner, etc. Guess I'll need a before / after scale article.
