    I dyed some interior vinyl..

Works awesome. I just tried this small peice for now. But I rubbed feverishly, scratched with my thumbnail, and it won't come off. Stuff comes in many colors to suit your needs. I am converting my tan interior to a 'modena' color combo. The dye I used is an aerosol called VHT Color Penetrating Dye for Vinyl and short nap carpets. Found it at my local auto parts store. Check out the pics on how it matches.

WOW, perfect DYI project. Do they have a nice deep red that would work on black components?

wow, that looks cool. post pics when you do the whole thing. how much does it cost and how far does a bottle go? (how many bottles for your full interior). i guess it's a spray, so did you disassemble to the armrest to dye it or mask it off right there?

I did this in an old e30 I had. It had some really bad cracking in the leather, and since I had trouble matching the blue, I dyed the seats black. Then, I dyed all the interior panels black to match. It looked absolutely perfect. Then I replaced the soft top (it was a cabrio) with a black one. All I had left to do was replace the carpet, but then I sold it and bought another car that already has a black interior!

By the way, the stuff I used was sponge-on instead of spray. Might be easier for the panels that you can't get out of the car easily.

You dyed your leather? What was the product called?

Satyen: A bottle lasts pretty long, you only need one solid coat per object. I plan on taking them all out, which should be easy, except the dashboard I bought 2 bottles, and expect them to last untill I get to the dash.. They are $6 canadian each.

Rich 325, what was the name of that leather dye? My seats and arm rest are black and have some cracking in them, you think the dye will make them look better?

One of my friends dyed parts of black interior white. It looks like it came from the factory. I wonder how long it would hold up? BTW looks good!

The dye itself won't rub or scratch off, but white may start looking pretty dingy pretty quickly I would guess.

the way i think of dying vs painting is that with paint, you coat the object with a layer and let it dry. the color you see when you look at the object isn't the object itself but the layer of paint on top of the object. with dye, it becomes part of the object... so when you apply this stuff, do you let it bond or whatever and then wipe off the excess? or does it just evaporate? just curious. interesting substance.:

hm... might be cool to dye parts of the black interior seats a nice red. For that nice two-tone "gran tourismo" look as canadians call it... Some kid at my school has an interior thats red/black in his black civic, I think it looks nice , even though its a rice-mobile :

i'm also curious whether it will work on the seats of my car -- 97 328is, fake leather (er, "leatherette": ) seats. not quite vinyl, not quite leather.

although i don't want to go overboard.... i am still seeing visions of how easy it would be to mask of areas with tape and templates and custom dye all kinds of designs (roundels, ///M, pikachu, etc) directly into the vinyl

Its a pure dye, you spray it on, leave it for 30 mins, and it soaks into the surface. I am pretty sure it will work on leatherette. I have real leather in my car, but leatherette in the door panels. This weekend when I take my doorpanels apart, I will sample a small peice of leatherette and see if it dyes properly, just do the backside of the door inserts or something. You don't have to wipe excess off or anything. I will let you know how it turns out, and pictures should be up end of the weekend..

i thought true leather seats weren't an option on non-M 3 series until 98? i thought mine were real leather for a while, but read that 'fact' somewhere and realized that it would explain why the seats are in such damn good condition.

Well, did a bunch of interior panels today. Did the panel under the steering wheel. Did the lower console panel, the console (contains cupholders etc..) and all of the assorted peices related. Also did the glovebox and surrounding peices. Next up is the door panels. Here are some shots of what I did today. I used up about 1 full bottle of dye for all these peices.. not sure how I am going to do the dash yet...................
Plan on getting black mats as well.
