Damn shift knob pops off under hard shifting!

Man, I gotta learn to stop grabbing the shifter too strongly when I shift hard.

Since a couple of days, the shifter stays in my hand when I shift (aggressively ) from 1st to 2nd and 3rd to 4th. It completely pops off the lever.

That just gave me a reason to get Doug Whalen's shift machine!

mine just popped out the other day also. It looks as if the plastic piece along the inside bottom also broke, so I am gonna try to get a new one from the dealers.

Back on topic, the shift knob popping off thing seems to be a common occurrence for our cars. I know two others who did the same thing. The only thing you can really do to avoid it is...take valium pills and relax a little when you drive.

You might consider getting an aftermarket knob that has fastening screws along the side a la MOMO Air Race or the UUC Motorwerkes carbon fiber ones.

I threw out my shoulder tryingo tget mine off It never happens to me. I think the reason is that I had 2 BMW;s b4 and learned that they dont require Jam shifting like the chevy's i used to own. You should be able to shift fast and clean with just one finger unless you have greasy fingers try practicing using NO force. I also found that Force Shifting caused numerous bad shifts, the BMW knows where it needs to go. I was teaching my mom to drive my M roadster adn this is why I am bringing this up. She kept forcing the gear change and kept missing third and hitting fifth. After telling her 25 times she finally eased up and tried the one finger trick, it worked and she was able to see from that hard much pressure is needed to make a shift.

One evening, my wife came in the house after driving my Powerstroke, carrying the shift knob in her hand. She carefully handed it to me.

"Honey, This thing came off in your truck."

"That's the shift knob. Why did you pull that off ?"

"I didn't pull on it, it just flew off."

"You mean it just spontanesly flew up in the air?"

"Well, I know I didn't pull on it. Don't you believe me?" ...
(She now has 'the look' on her face that any married man will understand.)

Puzzled, her husband carefully examines shift knob looking for a hidden "James Bond Shift Knob Ejector Spring"... but couldn't find it.

At this point, he knows better than to comment on his findings, so he bites his tongue, sighs, and puts the knob back on the shift lever.

Perhaps some day I'll find that missing ejector spring. It's gotta be there in the cab somewhere.

My old knob never popped off but it did become loose and vibrate over 3000 rpm. Now I have the Doug Whalen shifter and I don't think this thing will ever come off by accident, this thing holds on tight! Not to mention the Whalen makes the shifts a little shorter and weighs more so they are smoother now as well.

I will be trying UUC's solution to our little gear-shift issue, will keep you all updated on that progress. maybe in August we can do a "test-drive" of all the shifters and vote on our favorites...???

I have the UUC illuminated knob and have nothing but great things to say. Talk to me when the weather warms, though. That's one thing I loved about the stock leather knob. It never got too hot to handle in the hot summer sun. Can't say as much for the carbon fiber variety. But, damn it looks gooood!

That was always a concern of mine with some of the aluminum shift knobs, heat, etc. I had a bud with a Stang who got a Billet Aluminum knob with the thread pattern on it, we were grabbing lunch and his top was down the whole time, we cam back out and it was like that scene in "Raiders Of The Lost Ark" when he grabbed the knob and burned his palm with the thread pattern visible on his hand....
