Tire Rack has a diagram to show you what offset is. Go to TR and search offset.

Looking at The Beyern Mesh Wheel.
Can I pull of a staggered fitment. 18x8.5 front/18x9.5 in the rear? Maybe run a bit narrower tire in the rear than normal on a 9.5 rim? Stretch it a bit? I plan on rolling the fenders but are there any major mods that would have to be done?

    Rooz,

You can go with a 255/40R17 on the factory wheel. If you go to 18" the tire size would depend on the size of the wheel and the offset of the wheel. The biggest I would recommend would be 225/40R18 and 255/35R18.
If I can help let me know.

Tim, If you stay on the narrow side on the tires it would work with the fender lip roll and or more negative camber. Try a 245/35R18 and you should be ok.
If I can help let me know.

    1999 M3 Coupe
I've been looking for a set of wheels for my car for a few months now, and I have decided on which set to get but I have no clue about the sizes. FYI, my car is a 1999 M3 coupe, on GC track/school coilovers (440lb/550lb if it makes any difference).

I know that I want to run 8.0x18 fronts and 9.0x18 or 9.5x18 rears. I'm down with rolling my fenders, and maybe even cutting the underside lip off, but I don't want to pull the fenders (major body work). I will most likely run Michelin PS2s, 225/40/18 fronts and 255/35/18 rears, unless a better tire comes out. I will be going with -2 degree camber in the front, and -1 degree in the back (unless I need to go even less). The only thing that's holding me back is the offsets, because I am trying to get the most lip out of the wheel (BBS GT2 magnesium). Here's what I need to know:

    1) What offset for the 8" fronts will make it flush with the fender?
    2) What is the lowest offset I can run on 9" wheels in the rear?
    3) What is the lowest offset I can run on 9.5" wheels in the rear?

I know it's kind of hard to give exact numbers, because there's variables like how much lip I can cut, or how aggressive I will roll my fenders. Hopefully this thread can point me in the right direction. Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the answer Jim, however, I am not sure I understand your recommendation for the 18" size...

Let me tell you why... (ANd please tell me if I'm wrong)

Let's figure out the diameter of the factory setup...

    Considering that 1 inch = 25.4 mm

    Front: 225/25.4 = 8.8.....
    8.8.... * .45 (45% of width is tire profile) = 3.9....

    3.9... * 2 (top + bottom) + 17 (wheel size) = 24.97...

So the factory front setup is 24.97 inches tall

I'll spare you the explanations for the rear..

    Rear 245/40/17 = 24.71 inches tall

Now, again.. I don't know too, too much if I'm correct but my guess is I need to come as close to those numbers as possible, right?

SO..... from what I calculated here's the closest setup I could think of on an 18" wheel....

    Front: 235/40/18 = 25.4 inches tall
    Rear: 255/35/18 = 25.02 inches tall

BUT... A 225/40/18 = 25.08 inches tall...HOWEVER being that the wheel is 8.5" wide (inside proportions so I am ASSUMING outside proportion is probably close to 9")

9" = 228.6 mm Meaning a 225mm tire would be too narrow for this wheel? AM I correct? And IF the wheel's INNER width is 8.5" then the 235/40/18 would be the proper setup, but if 8.5" is the outside width then 8.5" = 215.9mm, then the 225/40/18 would be perfect?

    Jim,
I am sure this question has been asked, but need to know about tire fitment. I want to buy one of two OEM M3 replica rims, 17"x8" 42mm offset, and looking to put 245/40/17 tires on all 4 corners. Will they rub, or will I need a spacer for the front. (have a great deal on almost free new tires)
My car is a 01 325Ci with sports pkg.
    Thanks in advanced.

    jb61,

The 245/40R17 with the E36 M3 wheel should fit without a problem. The front may take a little work but it has been done many times. Sometimes just a small 3 to 5mm spacer is needed.
If I can help with anything just let me know.

    Jim,

I needed some help on getting new tires. The wheels are 18x8.5, 35mm offset, approx 23-25lb wheel weight, 72.6mm centerbore.

Whats the widest tire I can fit on a 93 325i, its not lowered or anything, stock?

What are my options on all 4 tires? As well as a staggered look?

    TIA

Thanks Jim, but my car is an e46 (01 325Ci), if that makes a difference on the m3 replica wheels. And second, where can I get the 3-5mm spacers ?? Or would it be better if I find some wheels with a smaller offset for the front ??
    TIA

    abbott555,

For the offset I would not go bigger than the 225/40R18. You might still have to roll the fender lip depending on the specific tire you choose.
If I can help let me know.

The 245/40R17 is just a little tight sometimes on the front.

    2007 M6 Cabby Wheel Question

    Hi guys,

The dealership says my 2007 M6 Cabby should be here in a few weeks, so I just ordered the new wheels/tires for it. I wanted to get some input as to if these wheels might stick out further than the OEM would have, which I don't think I would like.

I am not sure what the offset of the new wheels is (or if I really know what "offset" actually means) but here is what the wheel company told me to order:

    DCR INFINEONS
    Front: 9.5"
    Rear: 11"

    MICHELIN PS 2
    Front: 255/30/20
    Rear: 295/25/20

    Thanks for any input

I would need the offset of the wheels to be sure. When I looked at the M6 stock they already were at the fender so I can't see them sticking out much more.

OK, forgive me for sounding like an idiot, but if the stock wheels are 10" in the rear and 8.5" in the front, and the new wheels are an inch wider...where does that extra inch go?

I know I hate it when I see a car with wheels that stick out like a matchbox car. Does the "extra" wheel go in towards the middle of the car?

I will try to get the offset of the new wheels today as soon as they open.

    THANKS!!!!

I am interested in getting some 16x7.5 wheels for my 1987 325is. I believe the offset is 20 or 25. Would i need spacers with this setup?

    2004 330 coupe rims will it fit 97 M3?

I am badly in need of winter wheel & tire. Came across 2004 BMW 330 couple after market rims/tires. These were bought from tire rack. Tire size is 205/55QR-16

I want to know whether these will fit my 97 M3. I think it will clear M3 brakes.

If the wheel offset is different what effects will it have ?

I am really looking for some time now. I belive my options are limited with regards to wheels for my M3 becos
    1. big M3 brakes
    2. Bolt pattern 5x120
    3. 16" or 17" wheel size

Am I missing anything here ?
