I own a 1994 318i convertible and when i turn on my analogue climate control i hear the blower running on all four speeds but no air flow is coming through any of the vents. and when it rains my windows are fogging up making it impossible to see. i have replaced the microfilter and the blower resistor and have checked the fuses under the hood and still i have this problem. very fustrated at this point. any suggestions would be appreciated. Just guessing here but could it be a problem with the valve doors not opening? If so, could you provide an illustration or directions on correcting that if that is the problem.
Hey man, thanks for the effort taken to put the info together and explain to some of us first timers. I found the info very useful. I was able to locate and remove the resisitor pack ok. It's a little tight under there but i managed. I thought i'd try something though before disconnecting it. I pulled it out and let it hang while still connected and engaged power, starting the climate control. The resistor pack got pretty hot actually and i don't think this is normal. What do you think. could it pose a fire hazzard ??
Anyway, i'm going to place an order at my local. Price here in Australia is around $200.
I replaced the final stage as I was having all the issues in the thread (come on and off , some controls worked some did not not ) - now that I have replace the final stage I get nothing from the control unit no lights nothing? I attached the plug to the old final stage to see if there was a issue but got nothing - is there a reset or ?? any help would be great -- it is a 98 328is thx
Nice DIY - I just changed my Final Stage in my 1998 M3/4.
The current dealer price at Hendrick BMW of Charlotte, NC with CCA Discount is $123.51 (pre-tax)
Diagnosed, travel to dealer for part and back, replaced - 3 hours.
Sure....could have got it cheaper online...but with the temp at 100+ deg F right now....it was money well spent

Thanks for great DIY
I have a 1998 E36 , and I replaced the FSU with a used one ( couldnt get a new one here) , it went fine for a month , now again and myabe once in a week it suddenly stops working , when I disconnect the FSU and connect the old one , it works for a while then stops again , but I noticed that the FSU turns very hot in seconds after connecting it
Hi, really nice DIY, but I didn't manage to solve for mine e36.. I have similar problem.. i've got a '91 e36 with analog AC.. The blower works/doesn't work just whenever it wants to... actually it hasn't been working recently for several days now.. all buttons and heater work... but there is no air coming out..on any position..
As I understand there is no FSU in my model... it could be blower resistor, am I right?
WHERE should it be located then??
Nice writeup!
I'm going to have to try this this weekend. My blower stopped blowing today.
My symptom:
-After driving for about 30 seconds, blower would blow full blast no matter which setting (unless off, which worked). '97 M3 (auto climate control)
I replaced the FSU ($85 pelicanparts) today. It took 30 minutes, then another 30 to get the kick panel back on due to my own ineptitude. Now the blower is functioning normally!
Thanks for the write-up!

Ok guys... I have the auto climate control system.... all digital...
I bought a resistor off the forums and it looks totally different but it clips in place and looks almost exactly the same but the heatsink is different...
I plugged in the new resistor and still no air blowing out ;(
Do I need to replace the blower motor? ;( It is HOTTTT
Black Bimmer too ;(
First I replaced my Final Stage Resistor pack and things worked right for maybe 3 months. Looking back now I really am not sure if that was a failing part or not? After 3 month hottest in the cabin I could only get like 40% fan speeds or nothing. My feeling here is the climate computer temp sensor circuit (or related) failed when the air temp was hot (80degrees+) I found several fixers of the climate control computer unit on ebay for about $50 and sent mine in for servicing. I believe that all is needed here is a the replacement of a capacitor, but I elected to have the people who have the right capacitor and knownledge make the fix as I didn't want to risk messing on the the oterwise expensive computer control part.
Been working fine for about 4 months now. The e36 has several electrical weaknesses think I have all but an occassional door accuator issue fixed now
I'm not sure if my FSU is the right idea but I'm curious to see if you guys think these are symptoms of the FSU failure.
-AC controls change speeds on their own
-AC turns on by itself randomly
-I'm hearing a blowing sound and getting a little bit of air through the vents even with the climate control completely off and the car sitting stationary.
Should I go with replacing the final stage unit? Or do the capacitor in the climate control computer? Anyone have a good idea which one is the culprit in my case?
Thanks!

i know this is an old thread but I just used your instructions and wanted to say THANK YOU! now my 8month old won't freeze his baby balls in the back seat.
I just replaced this part and now I have heat.... but only on high or off settings.
Is there another part that needs to be replaced? Looks like it has been covered but I'm still not sure exactly. After reading through a few pages it looks like it may be a capacitor inside the unit? does this sound right?

i have a digital climate control. for first 20mins my fan speed is ok. every level or step is ok. but after 20 mins, the blower fan will decrease, then the step 6-8 or the last 3 step (blower fan) will not work.
Hi, Fantastic Writeup. My car seems to be having a different problem. The blower works fine and so does the AC. The Heat does not always come out though. It works intermittently. If I put the fan on Windscreen Demister, it blows out warm air (corresponds with the CLimate control temperature) but when using the fan normally, it blows out cold air. Any advise? There are the odd days when the heating works fine but its becoming rarer by the day.
Any advise would be handy.
Oh yeah the model is 2000 RHD. Im not sure if these come with a seperate blower resistor but isnt that just a fan speed regulator rather than termperature?

Hi
The car in question is a 1998 E36 318i (RHD). I've recently replaced the capacitor in the climate control unit to stop it switching off and on randomly but now I'm left with the current situation:
Fan can be controlled from the CCU and you can hear the fan running but no air comes out of the vents.
Would this be the resistor pack or the final stage unit? Also, has anyone got any advice as to where to purchase these bits in the UK please?
Many thanks in anticipation.
If resistor pack is bad then fan runs too slow for bars shown but you would still have some air.. If you hear fan running but cant get any air I would think
it's a actuator for venting perhaps. No air on recirculate or any vent setting?
I doubt it could be a horribly dirty cabin filter but if that hasn't been changed in 100,000+ it might be worth doing. Note it's not easy to change the E36 cabin filter.
Do you hear vents change when you switch from recirc, hi-vent front-vent?
IF not then all the more I am thinking venting isn't working.
Actually I think you might be on to something. I don't ever recall hearing the actuators on this car - how easy are they to get to/changed?If resistor pack is bad then fan runs too slow for bars shown but you would still have some air.. If you hear fan running but cant get any air I would think
