Take a look at this "Oil change intervals"

I found this on the my local BMWCCA website. I just thought I would post it here for a heads up.

That's what happens when you change your oil too often. Don't give enough time for the sludge to disolve... 25k miles is usually enough for me.

change oil to often, what the hell...i believe what he is saying by "a victim of 15,000 mile oils changes" is that it is not getting changed often enough. I dont really care I am sticking with 3,000. The reason why we change oil is that it looses its capacity to carry dirt and sludge.

I think supster's joke went over several heads.

I also think changing oil every 5k is okay, although since many of my miles are from short (~3 mile) trips, I prefer to change mine roughly every 3k.

edit for below: I'm not sure what "ur" is, but it's my understanding that synthetic oil doesn't break down in the same way that dino oil does at high temperatures. But I'm not a chemist, I just pick these things up from sources that I trust.

ur just wasting ur money, the idea of the synthetic is to keep it in longer. i'd suggest you use conventional oil in that case. i change my synthetic ever 6k, and swap the filter at 3

Hi Groovin, nice to see you here. Get your garage yet?

I usually do oil changes every 3-5k depending on the car. On the M I'll be doing it every 3k though.

Damn, I knew I recognized that username from somewhere. I see you also have stairs in your house.

I'm moving in about two weeks. Can't wait for that garage.

Yeh with mobil 1 synthetic I swap the filters every 3k and oil between 5-6k, depending on the oil service indicator lights. Never gone past 8k with any oil.

I have 5K on my Amsoil 5-W40 and I'm about to change it and get it analyzed by blackstone.. I'll let you know what I find.

I'm assuming the oil has at least 60-75% life left, but I like to think that I spoil my baby.

3K is absolutely obsurd for synthetic oil changes - totally totally a waste of money, but so is 5k...
But I aint one to gossip, so you aint heard it from me...

    Oil change intervals

Soon after I purchased my M3, I went to a local independent BMW shop (Autobahn Motorworks Inc in Mundelein, IL) to ask their opinion regarding synthetic vs mineral oil and oil change intervals. He suggested that no matter what type of oil you use, due to the fact that these cars run rich when first started, you shouldn't exceed 3000 miles between oil changes.

His reasoning is that the rich mixture results in fuel blowing past the piston rings on initial startup and diluting the oil over time. Leave your oil in much longer then 3000 miles, and and even synthetic oil looses much of it's lubricity due to the fuel dilution factor.

    Sounds reasonable to me.

Maybe that's got some effect on the sludge build up seen in the posted pic as well?

On my 97 BMW 528 which it now has 178k miles, I change the oil every 5k with BMW synthetic oil and never had a problem. It feels weird but every time I change the oil the car feels like it runs rich, but once I run a few couple of miles with the new oil, the car starts working hard as it should.

It must be local to your area, 'cuz unless you're buying shell oil or dyno castrol, Pep boys doesn't show it on their site (link to directory for stores and their weekly specials):

btw, Mann filter at 5k, change at 10k, and I see a little brown on the inside of my valve cover, but no sludge on the head.

Go in and ask them if they have the MADD fundraiser calendar. It is a national fundraiser that is sold for $1 per calendar. In it you will find a coupon for buy 3 get 3 free Mobil 1! (as well as a few other good ones) The coupon is valid through 2005 I think. I bought 5 calendars to stock up!

I just follow the oil lights on the cluster. Is anything wrong with them?
