After the most intense week in the last 12 years in my business including the weekend I had a few great microbrews then saw this thread, 2 minutes later I was back in the house popping another brew, really!

    It worked like buttered magic

    Thanks!

    Rick

Hi all! My lock was stuck in the "up" position and so my steering was stuck in a bad way. After dismantling the entire steering lock and ignition switch, I was able to remove the locking block. The problem was that the "elevator" had broken the tabs off the front and back and it was floating randomly in the slot. I removed it and voila! I put my Old Girl back together and all is well!

I'd like to do this, but does anyone have any idea if this could result in any floating parts (prev. loaded by the spring) that could move under track conditions and actually *cause* an unwanted locking?

Steering wheel started locking up today on our 95 325is. Could move the AT shifter back and forth and it would unlock till the next time you turn off the ignition.

I performed the drilling and spring pulling and its seems good to go. Wheel turns just fine. Inexpensive fix. Some advise though, use good sharp drill bits.

    Thanks folks for the information

I've seen all the other photos, but the one with the 'red square' doesn't show for me.

This thread is 8 years old, guessing if anyone had issue it would have come up by now?

Why would you apply logic, reason or fact here? This is the internet!

Did anyone remove or disable the steering wheel airbag before doing this mod?

I just did this, with the flu, in my slippers. Took 5 minutes just like everyone else. I didnt take anything off the car, no moludings or anything, just drilled right in the center. The spring was offset of the hole but I could see it, I used a cotter pin to move it over a bit, then some needle noses to pull it out.

    Tip:

Pack the drill bit with some heavy grease. This will catch most of the shavings, and prevent them from getting all over your car.

The spring has been removed on my car, I can still push the flap up and down to engage the steering lock.

I hit a bump and my steering locked up and sent me into a bush earlier today

Hi there guys. New to this....

Recently lost the keys to my dads 1998 (s) 520i.... Stuck in a little hole, needed the car moved into the garage while I get the keys made.... Now I managed to sort the gearbox situation which was it was stuck in park, now the car can be pushed!!!

probelm is e car is at a slight angle and the steering is locked. I have read this forum and attempted the drilling but with no luck!!! Can I get some guidance on where exactly to drill!!

Will this work on this model of bmw??

Help would greatly be appreciated and thank you all in advance
