So I just went out to the garage and did this and it took all of 5 minutes. Spring was right where it is on the picture. Did a 3/16th pilot hole and then a 3/8ths momma, grabbed the spring and voila, no more steering lock.

Is it just as easy on an e46?

So I just drilled the specified hole in my '99 Z3, but I don't see a spring ... I just see another moving, flat plate that appears to be the bottom of the lock pin itself. It moves down, towards the hole, when I turn the key, and then snaps up, away from the hole, when I remove the key. Do I also need to drill through this plate? Or is my car different and I need to drill elsewhere to find the spring?
anybody have a pic anymore. The page is dead and I want to do this.

Marshall, was that for me? I'm pretty sure I'm right where the dot is.
hi josh!
na, for wcm3. i would have guessed the 99 z3 had the same lock. does the key look like an e36 key or a e46 key? maybe a quick check of realoem.com to see if the part # is the same on a z3 as an e36. on mine there was no sliding plate under the red square, just a spring that popped out.
marshall
Looks like my car shares this part with E36s after 6/98.
Damn, that pic couldn't be any better. I just drilled right where the red square is, just like Mike, 3/16" pilot, 3/8" final, and the spring fell out as I withdrew the bit. Voila - no more lock.

Just did this, took about five minutes. Took the spring out and thats that.

silly question, but what is the safety advantage here?
If you need to kill the car with the ignition switch (remember, you need to keep the stock wiring harness for Prepared), you won't accidentally also lock up the steering wheel by turning the key too far.

Just a note guys: Test that it actually works! Mine does not. It still locks sometimes, even though I've drilled it out (yes, I did drill the right place). I need to do a bit more digging in there to see what's going on, but I have the same issue as Josh in post #32

I did eventually find the spring. It wasn't in the same location as the other photos. In my car ('99 Z3), it was right smack dab in the middle of the big flat rectangular part.
