Does anybody know how to disable the steering wheel lock on the E36? So far I've only been able to find this one picture from Bimmerworld (http://www.bimmerworld.com/Tech/Steering_Lock.jpg) and I don't want to go drilling around in the steering column area without first having a clear idea of what I'm doing.
As usual, TIA!
that pic is correct, EXCEPT, DO NOT drill where the hole in the pic is. drill where the red square is.
it really is that simple.

I'm sure glad I asked!Originally Posted by mlytle

no harm done, it is faster since it is lighter and i now have the desireable flow through ventilation feature!
Yeah, not to mention your car is 0.01 oz lighter as well!Originally Posted by mlytle
Thanks again!
Have you had a chance to schedule your annual inspection before getting to the school? If not, it may be too late, but I'd check into it anyway.
I'm still not sure about my schedule this weekend.

George, yes I did call the local scrutineer the week before Thanksgiving and he was supposed to get back to me last week but he didn't, most probably because of the holidays.Originally Posted by Geo31

In any case, the supps state that there will be tech on site so I plan on being there early on Friday (took Thurs. and Fri. off) to get my car tech'ed if I can't get a hold of the scrutineer.
If you can make it, that would be great. If not, shouldn't be a big deal. Please email me at snk328is@comcast.net if it looks like you can make it.
Digging up an old thread - does anyone have this pic anymore, the one that shows where to drill? I can't find it on the new BW site, and I'd like to do this while I have my interior apart. Thanks in advance! My email is vernon_anderson@yahoo.com
Be sure to drill where the red box is... not where the 'practice holes' are.

Thanks Chris!!!
Once you drill the hole, there is a spring behind it... That's the part that needs to be removed, IIRC.

glad you brought up this old thread. I need to do it also.

From wannabe to has been in a few short years..... the older I get, the faster I was
Me three
I used a 3/8" bit. I didn't have to remove the spring.
Dumb question... why?
i kno wits required for NASA. Not sure about BMWCCA.
CCA CR's rules only recommend steering lock disabling, apparently for all classes including stock. It's not mandated.
me three - thanks

Gilbert's more interested in the lesson on hot-wiring !!!
ummm - the car would need a motor to get hot-wired!! still has the steering column though...

I've seen some of those pieces you drive and RARELY did they have a motor (functioning style!)
