Question E34 Instrument Cluster Tear Down.....

    Hey Guys,
Total noobie here, even posted this up in the wrong forum! This looks like really cool forums with a lot of knowledge. Just as a bit of background I tend to make big jobs out of small ones, well anyway, my steering wheel squeeks, the guy at the dealership said it just needs some grease on the contact, but I thought that once I had the wheel off, I would pull the cluster and install some white-face guage faces and stainless trim rings. Are there any pitfalls to doing this?, what should I know about going into something like this?

    Thanx very much!

Mostly you must disconnect the battery before removing the airbag / cluster. If you don't disconnect the battery, you'll trip the SRS light and it can only be reset by the dealer.

Get a Bentely Manual. Also be very very careful removing the speedo Needles. You can use a fork ( believe it or not BMW has a tool for this). Other than that the Bentely can guide you through the entire process....

In My '92 525, I've got no airbag , its no problem removing the instrument cluster without removing the wheel. Just flip it towards you, "lay" it on the steering wheel and turn the steringwheel left till you can get the cluster out
