    >>Time to change out my Mobil 1 5w30 syn....no wonder I have to fill up the engine a lil bit here and there ...must be burning a some oil GRRRRRR<<

Yea... I laid in 2 cases of the Mobil 1 10W-30 to use after my Amsoil 10W-40 is used up.. This amsoil IS ACEA A3 rated, And has a good hi temp sheer rating, but i have only 1 change worth left. Its been costing around $5.25/qt I think, plus shppg. I got the MObil 1 on sale. But after reading this, and realizing I like to change the oil in conjunction with the srvc lights, with a filter change halfway through, I figured id better either stay with the amsoil, OR, find another, less expensive ACEA A3 rated oil. Enter the BMW synthetic 5w-30! I used to buy this stuff for about $3.50, and with a good ACEA and HTHS rating, I think Ill switch to that, after selling my Mobil 1 10W-30.

So much of the oil info just keeps changing. Not too long ago, when the Group IV base stocks were being promoted heavily, it was also being said that you should Avoid oils with Big viscosity spreads, like 0W-40, 15W-50, etc. It was said that they would degrade faster around the edges, ie, after testing, it was found they no longer tested out with the wide range; for instance, the 15W-50 might test like a 15W-40 or less.

However, iM now liking what Im hearing in this thread; ie, for longer useage patterns like I use, main things to look for are the ACEA A3 ratings, and, the HTHS rating of 3.4 or higher. The BMW 5W-30 fills the bill nicely, and its priced right.

How does amsoil 10w-30 compare to Mobil 1 5w-30 and Factory BMW Synth 5w-30? What is the difference in quality and performance for so-cal weather? Is the difference negligible from 5w to 10w? I 'm a newbie when it comes to oils.

Would you guys recommend me change to Amsoil 10w-30, or continue using mobil/castrol 5w-30?

go here if you are interested in cheap cases of Amsoil 10w-30 (XL-7500) synthetic oil

I saw Mobil 1 0w-40 being advertised as a "european car formula". Im a sucker for marketing.

But IM SCARED that the 0w-40 is too thin for my 90k 328.

The 0W-40 IS a European formlation.. Look at the ACEA A3 rating! Other than the 15W-50, no other MObil 1 has it! Matter of fact, I sold my 10W-30 mobil 1, and loaded up on 0W-40 for this precise reason. It used to be thought that a wide viscosity range, like this 40 points, was an issue.. But with today's engineered synthetics, I dont believe that to be valid any longer. Plus, the rating allows this oil to last longer without breaking down.

Uh, I have Mobil 1 5W-50 with SuperSyn and on the bottle it says:

"Meets API SL/SJ/CF and ACEA A3/B3/B4.
Approved against MB 229.3 and VW 505.00
    Porsche Approved"

Ok, well thats fine then.. Add that do the mobil 1 0w-40, and 15W-50 with ACEA A3 ratings. I didnt know Mobil 1 came as a 5W-50, because if you go to the following site: http://www.mobil1.com/index.jsp

    It says:
    Exceeding Standards
Mobil 1 with SuperSyn™ is available in five viscosity grades:

    Mobil 1 with SuperSyn™ 10W-30 – Higher-Mileage Vehicle Formula
    Mobil 1 with SuperSyn™ 5W-30 – Newer Vehicle Formula
    Mobil 1 with SuperSyn™ 15W-50 – Performance Driving Formula
Mobil 1 with SuperSyn™ 0W-30 – Enhanced Fuel Economy Formula
    Mobil 1 with SuperSyn™ 0W-40 – European Car Formula

You note that there is no mention of your 5W-50.

    Yeah, it's weird.

In the FAQ section of mobil1.com is the explanation.

Q:Why do Castrol and others market SAE 5W-50 grade synthetic motor oil while ExxonMobil in North America does not? Does SAE 5W-50 offer advantages?
A: SAE 5W-50 is not recommended for the vast majority of newer cars sold in North America. They are designed for SAE 0W-30, 0W-40, 5W-30 and 10W-30 grades...and this is what car manufacturers recommend.
But I'm happy to note that it's the factory fill for the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren

Mobil 1 Named as Factory Fill and Recommended Service Fill Lubricant for New Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Sports Car

Fairfax, Virginia USA (October 20, 2003) -- -- Mobil 1 with SuperSyn(TM) anti-wear technology, the world's leading synthetic motor oil, has been named by Mercedes-Benz as the recommended engine oil for its recently released 626 horsepower Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren sports car. Each car will leave the factory filled with Mobil 1 5W-50. The announcement was made at the Frankfurt (Germany) AutoShow.

Purchasers of the SLR McLaren will see the words "Recommend Mobil 1 5W-50 oil" when they examine the Mercedes AMG-developed V8 high-performance engine.

7 quarts is fine. Check the dipstick and see, but 7 is what I do. Also check your oil level regularly. If you redline at lights and top out a lot, you can burn a lot of oil quick. I check my oil level twice a week.

    >>Yeah, it's weird. In the FAQ section of mobil1.com is the explanation.<<

There 'explanation' doesnt address the fact that, aside from the 0W-40 and 15W-15, they DO make one more ACEA A3 rated oil, 5W-50, but they DONT list it in their spec sheets and materials.. you have to go to press releases and the like to even know that they make it! I dont recall ever having seen it in the stores.. Do you have any trouble finding it? Are they having as much trouble putting it on the shelves, as we are in finding out anything about it from there materials?

but its like a different language.... so which one do you suggest if you were going to change your oil?

Unless you have an M3, in the following order:

    1) Mobil 1 0w-40,
    2) Mobil 1 0w-40, and
    3) Mobil 1 0w-40

Why does this say "unless you have an M3" use mobil 1 0w-40 ??? am i the only one who saw this?

I've always ran Mobil 1 15-50 in both my M3s. I never have lifter tick and they have both ran awesome with zero problems of burning oil at all. It never gets below 35 degrees here so I have no worries about low temps. If I were only driving in warmer temps I wouldn't run anything but the 15-50. It has served me very well. When I did cams on my white car my mechanic commented on how good my cam blocks looked when he took the cams out. He said he usually sees some scoring, he attributed it to short oil change intervals usually around 2-3k miles sometimes less and good oil.

Yes it is. BMW 5w-30 makes by Castrol. Castrol also has 10w-40 which support A3/B3.

The guy who bought Mobil 5W50 lives outside of US. Mobil 1 5W50 does exist and it is factory fill on McLaren SLR. Castrol 5W50 here is only a group 3 oil, not group 4 like all mobil 1. There are so much more choices on oil outside of US such as Agip, HKS...... We get the crappiest stuff here where they even call hydrocracked dino oil "synthetic".

What about Shell Rotella 5W40? I saw other tests that said it was very good oil. No ACEA ratings at all. just CH-4/SL. I've used it for 2-3 yrs in all my cars and cycles with good results. I'm guessing it is group 3.

ANY Mobil 1 oil I've tried burns oil in my 95 M3. I've been using Castrol Syn-blend for a couple years now and hardly burn any oil at all. I'm curious how much Synthetic is actually in the Syn blend though. It's probably like a fruit juice -- sais "contains real fruit juice" on the label, then on ingredients sais less than 1% real juice!

hey guys, what about the mobile 1 0w-50 synthetic race oil? i saw some at autozone the other day. and it seems like a good idea actually, zero weight for good protection when cold and etc, and 50 for good protection and reduction of taps/ticks/knocks that are engines make. the recommended oil for our cars by dealership is 20w-50 anyways. what yall think?
