when im driving around town sometimes i skip 2nd n 3rd, and go from 1st to 4th gear. its a habbit i picked up when i drove a truck. my car seems to have enuff low end power for me to move around in 4th at low rpms. is doing this good or bad for the trasmission?
No as long as you're not lugging in 4th. I skip 3rd a lot, wind it out in 2nd then drop into 4th
only when im not granny shifting, and double clutching like im supposed too, ha you almost had me haha.
I do that too.Originally Posted by Chris325i

I do 1-3 or 2-4, but never 1-4 but I'm sure its possible.

I agree. I don't like how it sounds, but whatever.Originally Posted by Daved
My question is why???? To fuggin lazy to shift one more time???
I usually find myself going 2-4, then back down through all the gears on deceleration.

I do the 1-2-4 shift if I'm trying to get out of a light quick but not really exceed the speed limit by much. Otherwise I just go 1-2-3-4 shifting around 2500-3000.

My friend's brother's Vette does this and while its very strange at first, it's not as bad as it sounds - and can't hurt anything. I don't do it in my car though, not nearly enough power to get up to speed unless I wind it out a bit, especially in the heat of Arizona.
i used to go from 1st to 5th, down a slight hill though and reving to 6200rpm in 1st. Yot just wait until the revs drop a bit further than usual.
never.
I read about that corvette doing this, taking u from 1st to 4th if you weren't pushing the car so I decided to try it in my e46 325. i shifted at a normal 3500rpm in 1st to 4th and the car could hardly move, def not enough power in my car to do this. I could skip 2nd I guess, but that no fun, I got a manual to change the gears myself!

You know, it's funny how the idea of skipping the shifts sounds bad, but check this out. In manual C5 Corvettes, if you're accelerating conservatively, the shifter will go automatically from 1st to 4th. It's something that Chevrolet did to help in the feul economy or something. However, many people find this very annoying and there is a method to remove it.
When I read the title I thought you meant downshifting....I do 5-3 all the time
but upshifting I never skip.
Some ladies like a hand-held. I prefer to drive mine.
No, 2nd-4th or 1st-3rd.
Reason: saving the clutch.
