Hi All,
I have an 85 with the dreaded soggy carpets. The car is new to me, and RHD. I found significant rust and corrosion around where the pedal meets the floor, which i've had cut out and made good. The issue is now, how are the carpets getting wet? The water doesn't smell like coolant per-se (smells like wet carpet), and the coolant level hasn't moved. I have looked around the cowl for a drain location but can't see anything? What is my best plan of attack here?
- Door cards off and check vapour barrier?
- The car has no sunroof, so which drain locations should I check?
Any help appreciated!
Thanks,

remove #8 and it will be at the end of the cowl opening to the wheel well. Gets muddied and full of leaf just to not be a working flap anymore.
same on E34 and E32, I once posted all the possible clogged drain holes, here with pics https://www.bimmerforums.com/forum/s...-location-pics

Thanks very much, got the wheel cover off and whilst a bit dusty it didnt seem too blocked. I got fingers into the flap (ahem), and pulled a bit of mud out but it seemed ok overall. Maybe I should run some wire into it to make sure it is clear.
Thanks shogun for the tips, more investigation is needed I guess!
pull the rubber piece off and clean it is the easy way to make it right
A little update. We had a deluge of rain today. I've realised that water is leaking from the top of the drivers door. It appears to be between the seals, though the seals look new and in good condition. The door doesn't close well and has to be slammed, so perhaps I need to adjust it?
Additionally, on the carpet there was a trickle of water coming from towards the centre console.
I did wonder, do the flaps for the AC under the cowl stay permanently open? Mine seem open all the time?
The two small say 2.5"x4" flaps under the cowl? With ACC they open on max AC via the recycle pod, should be pink hose. It is way in there above the defrost pod. Unsure how they work on the non auto system
The foam that seals the case to the firewall fails with age. This causes lots of leakage with age. The two drains filling with junk also contribute as noted.
