I have a 2021 X!, with about 16,000 miles on it. Have had the vehicle for 3 years, and while I like it a lot, I am having an issue with the rear brake pads.

My driving consists of 98% of the time within a 25 to 30 mile radius of our place. More than half the time, I am driving on side streets/roads. Thus, more stop and go than on the interstate. I do not ride the brakes at all, do not stomp down on them, no real sharp turns, etc., etc. 98% of the time, only my wife and I are in the car, and the other 2%, we carry groceries.

I have religiously followed the maintenance schedule for the X1. That is, I have bought it in for maintenance/service in October 2022, October 2023, and last month. Except for the rear pads down to 4 mm on that October 2023 visit, nothing else wrong. Had the rear pads and sensor replaced in January 2024.

I alternate the use of our X1 with our 2013 Toyota Camry XLE V6. That car is actually a joy to ride in, and I have taken it "off road" MANY more times than the X1. But my primary driving habits, style, etc. is identical with the X1.

The Camry came with Ceramic brake pads, and they lasted over 70,000 miles. When I replaced them, I used Ceramic pads again. I already made another thread explaining how quickly the rear semi-metallic pads have worn down on the X1.

What I want to know is can I use Ceramic pads on the X1? From what I have read, and feedback from BMW forums, most of it is positive, but some have remarked that the rotors will wear faster, whiel a few say it is not a "good" idea to switch. I was also provided with a "BMW Document", and in it it says that BMW does use Ceramic pads.

So, simple questions:

1. Can I use Ceramic pads?
2. Will they provide longer use (based on my driving style, which I do not anticipate will change much at all, if any)?
3. I suspect that by November of next year, the rear pads will be down to 4 (or3) mm (front ones still have enough thickness). If I can use Ceramic pads, is it OK to "mix and match"?
