Hey guys I am Ricky and a proud owner of my beloved e38 1/15 mora Metallic search E38MOB on Instagram it’s all around on there.
This is my first post
E38 running rough since last summer. The car runs rough and shakes
It is a show car / weekend car so just this week got time to fix it. Thought it would be something small but I was wrong
Replaced:
OEM coils
NGK plugs
OEM Cam position sensors
It’s had a full over haul on the cooling chain guide vanos units most of the car has been replaced by oem parts about 1000 miles ago
Took out the 3-4 ignition coils while running and didn’t make any difference showing they are not working
Checked all wires to the dme unit no cuts no burns
Dme is dry and connections clean and dry no corrosion
Could it be the dme unit internally ?
I am
Hoping timm will be able to reply as he is a legend here in the uk
Thank you all in advance

Welcome here. Are there any codes?
Did the trouble start after the timing chain guides were done? If you can pull coils with no change in how the engine is running, you should have current codes. We really need those details to help you further.
I strongly suggest you recheck your timing. Did you do this work yourself?
no I got it done by someone who specialises in e38s bmw here
in the uk. I Will get the car sent to him. I will send the dme off today £45 if they don’t find a issue not much to loose
yesterday we checked continuity of all the plugs /injectors seems fine
thank you for all your help mayorchuck
Not sure if you found the answer but I just went through this exact same thing with my e38. Mines a 2001 740i. Bank 1 was dead, only running on cylinders 5-8. Found the bolt that holds the camshaft in had come undone cam wasn’t spinning with the engine causing the multiple cylinder misfire. Retimed the motor and now running on all 8 again.
