There were no changes to the engine and transmission on the 328d between the model years 2014-2018, as these engines all passed emissions tests without cheating - due to aggressive aftertreatment (DEF fluid). Firmware calibration is the same.
The only difference in drivetrain between LCI and pre-LCI was the transfer case on xDrives which had come with the rubber guibo instead of the aluminum one. Then BMW had put a recall for the pre-LCI to have the rubber giubo as well, to protect the transfer case output flange. It essentially solved the issues. Most, if not all, the pre LCIs will have new transfer cases and rubber giubos by now, which is actually a +1 for pre-LCI.
LCI does tend to have available LED headlights, different tail lights, and may come with a nicer idrive unit (NBT Evo, if optionally equipped)
