Custom startup Splash on Becker HeadUnit

I was sold an incorrect start up (aka faceplate swapped) traffic pro and am trying to figure out if I can salvage this by correcting the start up logo.

I could have swore this was possible unless I am mistaken?

    Appreciate guidance

The startup logo of the Becker Indianapolis and Indianapolis Pro is stored in the 24C64 EEPROM on the mainboard. It can be changed by reprogramming the EEPROM (see Becker Logo Editor).

The older Becker Traffic Pro does not have the 24C64 EEPROM. It has a 24C04 which is way too small to contain the logo. The logo is stored in the firmware. In fact, it seems each Traffic Pro has an array of manufacturer logos stored in its firmware (number of makes may depend on the firmware version). The faceplate tells the main unit which logo to show. [incorrect] So if you put a BMW faceplate on a Traffic Pro it will show the BMW startup logo and if you put a Ford faceplate on the same main unit it will show the Ford logo. [/incorrect] I have not yet looked into what exactly triggers this, but I assume the model number is stored in the faceplate EEPROM.

Changing the logo will require (micro) soldering and an EEPROM programmer.

That’s annoying. The face plate isn’t forcing the correct logo for a bizarre reason.

Hmmm it is a frameware version problem…. How does one update the frameware? On later units there was a system disk….

The firmware is distributed on the navigation CDs. If you insert a newer disc, it will automatically upgrade. At least that's how it is with the European discs.

Update: I don't think what I wrote earlier is correct (about every Traffic Pro containing a number of logos)... I searched around a bit and read about someone installing a LandRover Traffic Pro (which has a LandRover startup logo) in a Ferrari with the appropriate Ferrari faceplate and the startup logo became BECKER - not Ferrari.

It's more likely each has a Becker logo and the rebranded head units have an optional manufacturer logo. I don't think a BMW Traffic Pro will have a Ford logo and vice versa. With the proper faceplate they will show the manufacturer logo, and with any other faceplate just BECKER. The logo is most likely set at the factory and cannot be changed via the firmware.

I'd test this myself but I only have one Traffic Pro left (BMW Traffic Pro BE4769). I can however confirm that with the original BMW faceplate it shows BMW and with a BE4733 faceplate just BECKER. It'd be interesting to see what the BMW faceplate does on the BE4733 (or any non-4769), but I don't have it. My guess is it will simply show BECKER. It might be possible to reprogram the BE4733 faceplate to show BMW on the BMW unit, but I'm afraid it'll be impossible to show any other logo than BMW or BECKER on the BE4769.

What Becker Traffic Pro do you have (BExxxx)?

Ironically, the model was not listed on the side as it was a rehab unit from Becker directly
In that case, trying to update the frame where will not have any benefit per se

I got myself a dirt cheap Becker Traffic Pro BE4725 and performed some experiments... It turns out the BE4725 does contain several manufacturer logos after all. The BMW Traffic Pro BE4769 also contains a few logos but different ones (BMW brands).

Putting the BE4725 face on the BE4769 main unit shows a Becker logo. Putting the BE4769 face on the BE4725 main unit resulted in a Becker logo as well. With the original firmware version of the BE4725 (which I forgot to check) the BE4769 face did not have backlight on the BE4725 main unit. It did however have the Col(or) menu (not shown on the BE4769 main unit) and toggling from yellow to red enabled the backlight. After updating the BE4725 to the latest firmware version (Europe V10) the BE4769 front no longer had the Col(or) menu and the backlight could not be enabled.

Here are the contents of the 24C02 EEPROM on the PCB of the removable front (I had to desolder the EEPROM completely - I couldn't get in-circuit programming to work):

Address ranges 0x00-0x7F, 0x9F-0xAE and 0xB4-0xFF are the same between the BE4725 and BE4769 faces.

Addresses 0x94-0x9E contain the (encoded) last successfully entered security code. If the security code matches that of the EEPROM on the main unit, no code is asked upon power on (unless battery power was lost).

Addresses 0xB1-0xB3 seem to have effect on the Col(or) and Lcd menu but I tested this only very briefly:

    • 10 10 10, 11 11 11, 12 12 12 and 13 13 13 (default of BE4725 face): Enables Col(or) and Lcd menus
    • 14 14 14: Removes Col(or) menu and changes Lcd menu to Lig(th) where the backlight can be toggled between on and automatic. It's no longer possible to toggle between negative and positive
    • 15 15 15 (default of BE4769 face): Removes Col(or) menu (at least on version V10 - the unknown older version kept the menu)

Addresses 0xAE-0xB0 are what controls the logo:

    • 10 10 10 (default of BE4725 face)
      • On BE4725 main unit shows Becker logo
      • On BE4769 main unit shows Becker logo
    • 11 11 11
      • On BE4725 main unit shows Porsche logo
      • On BE4769 main unit shows Becker logo
    • 12 12 12
      • On BE4725 main unit shows Ford logo
      • On BE4769 main unit shows Becker logo
    • 13 13 13
      • On BE4725 main unit shows Renault logo
      • On BE4769 main unit shows Becker logo
    • 14 14 14 (default of BE4769 face)
      • On BE4725 main unit shows Becker logo
      • On BE4769 main unit shows BMW logo
    • 15 15 15
      • On BE4725 main unit shows Becker logo
      • On BE4769 main unit shows Land Rover logo
    • 16 16 16
      • On BE4725 main unit shows Becker logo
      • On BE4769 main unit shows Traffic Pro logo

The Porsche mode removes the compass and auxiliary input. The other modes do not suffer from this but it's possible there are other differences between the modes I did not notice in my brief tests.

I tried a few values lower than 10 and higher than 16 but these all result in Becker logos. Maybe there are other logos hidden but I did not feel like trying all combinations.

My guess is that the Ferrari Traffic Pro units are like the BMW units: Customized by Becker. So the Ferrari logo is probably only present in the Ferrari units...
