E39 Ignition Key spinning before contact is made

As stated in title when I put in the ignition key the key rotates a few times before it actuates and starts engine. What do I need to replace or is worn?

I have to recommend that you replace the ignition lock cylinder, and the ignition lock housing, at the very least. If you want to be done with the job once and for all, add a new key and the ignition switch. All parts need to come from the dealership.

If you try just replacing the lock cylinder, you may put the new one in, and find out that the housing has also failed...and then you might just be unable to get the new lock back out, and have to buy that again, along with the housing. The key itself is also likely very worn, after ~20 years. And the ignition switch is a known failure item.

Oh, you'll also need the fracture bolts (2)

This isn't a fun job, because, mainly, of the fracture bolts.
