    New to the BMW family.

I bought a 2004 e53 4.8si. It’s got 148k on it. So far I love it. I am concerned with what seems to be the transmission slipping when going into reverse. Any tips on diagnosing this?

Recoding of the sound? It's common for older e53 to have worn out bushings on the rear dif or the sub frame bushings and will create a pretty obvious como when changing gear directions (will also cause a thump when going over a bump especially when going up hill under load). Example: hitting a bridge expansion joint while going up hill.

There doesn’t seem to be any sound at all, it just takes forever to engage.

I'm not sure if this would cause your issue, but it could and it's the easiest thing to check...how is the transmission fluid level? If you're going to check Google the correct way to do it, honestly I have not done it yet, but bought the fluid to do a change on my 03 e53 4.4 soon.

Ok that sounds like valve body wear.

With a decent scanner like foxwell NT 510, you can monitor real-time values of the individual valve body solenoid. There's likely loss of pressure on the valve for reversing. Not uncommon for people to replace individual solenoids or the whole valve body to get normal shifting back.

Awesome, thank you. What about that other scanner I keep seeing people talk about, something 1.4

If it hasn’t had the fluid changed/flushed yet then I’d start there. In addition to a scan and real time monitor.

I think the 1.4 is scan software. Quite powerful but I recommend foxewelk 510-520. Not sure if the 720 works on the first gen X5 butt if it does get that.

Use an inspection camera to confirm the chain guides are intact and if so get a new OE chain tensioner. The chain guides on M62 usually fail about 150-170k miles if you don't replace the chain tensioner at 100-120k and every 60 after that (they wear out and don't supply enough tension for the crazy long one piece chain)
