I will post my sad tale that led me to this dilemma in the picture forum. currently I’m at a crossroads. I own a 550xi M sport from 2014 with the dreaded N63T engine at 99k. now granted this is after the second revision of this engine, and I really haven’t had that many issues with it owned from 34k and well taken care of. She drinks oil if I drive her hard in sport mode (2qts/4k) the extra oil burn gunks up the spark plugs which require them to be replaced about 15 K to 10 K early (no big deal) and the torque from the engine may have caused the rear prop shaft to bend and the joint to crack… but I’m replacing that, again nbd. seemingly I have made it to almost 100,000 miles without any of the major headaches that most people run into.
My question is I am at a point where I can sell this for about $18g’s and I have an opportunity to buy a ‘13 535xi with only 60k, 1 owner, a clean car fax and a seemingly clean and regular service history for ~18g’s.
while i will miss the stock 145 hp difference, is that N55 gonna give me 200-250k in theory (if loved on) vs the N63T that konks out at 150-175k?
basically am i being slick with this move if i’m looking to not have a car payment for a while because i want to make a couple real estate moves and keep that debt to income ratio nil? is the n55 the better engine hands down?
The N55 is considered a more trouble-free engine (but it does usually require regular maintenance like all the oil gaskets). But, I think your bigger concern should be how well was that 2013 535Xi treated.
